LETTER: Dear Cutie, having less murders than another island is not a Flex! You must stop it.

Attorney General, Steadroy Benjamin and Police Commissioner, Atlee Rodney

Mr Editor,

I write in response to a report in the Cabinet Notes posted on your popular and reliable website.

It appears to me that every time crime is on the increase the AG and Cabinet make the statement that crime is lower here than elsewhere.

Comparing crime statistics among different countries can be a complex task and may not present a complete picture of the overall safety of a nation.

Firstly, the number of reported murders alone does not necessarily provide a comprehensive understanding of the safety of a country.

Factors such as the types of crimes, the overall crime rate, and the effectiveness of law enforcement should also be taken into account.

Moreover, crime reporting practices can vary between countries, potentially influencing the accuracy of the statistics presented.

Additionally, attributing the lower number of reported murders solely to effective policing may oversimplify the multifaceted nature of crime prevention.

Other factors, such as social programs, economic stability, and community engagement, can also play pivotal roles in maintaining public safety.

While it is positive that Antigua and Barbuda has lower reported murder rates, it is essential to consider the broader context of safety, including non-lethal crimes, to assess the overall security of the nation.

Furthermore, focusing on collaboration and sharing best practices with neighboring countries could contribute to the overall improvement of safety in the entire region.

  1. That fat ox aka Not So Cutie Benjamin doesn’t care about anything but stuffing his and stuffing his saggy stomach. As for his friend the commissioner he is only sitting in his position ……. going to jail for the crimes they commit. The two of them disgusting alike.

  2. Well opined @ Ugly.

Many commentators seem to be taking some sort of SICK comfort by looking at other Caribbean crime rates and statistics to hide the fact that the growth in crimes here in Antigua is very troubling and disturbing.

Victims of crimes and concerned citizens do not want to hear this deflectionary VERBAL bile.

As part of the current cabinet, the Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin, shouldn’t be espousing about other islands, and concentrate on what’s happening at home.

WE LIVE HERE AND WE WANT ACTION FROM OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES.

If the AG or the Police Commissioner Rodney Atlee cannot protect us from this growing crime wave at present, say so, then step away and let qualified practitioners in dealing with crime do so.

ANYONE WITH AN ONCE OF SENSE RECOGNISES DEFLECTION AND VERBOSITY.

Again, many of us beg the obvious question:

WHY ISN’T TACKLING CRIME THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY?

  3. Let me hear how he can stop a murder. People go to rob people I believe most times to do just that, to rob. They are however prepared to protect themselves if caught. Are you saying the minister has knowledge of these robberies beforehand so he can stop them? Also, does the robbers work for him? A murder is committed in the heat of the moment and anyone is capable of it.

    • The problem is not before the crime is committed. It’s the lack of action after the crime is committed and the fact that these criminals feel so brazen to do the crimes in the first place because they know tweedle dee and tweedle dum in the picture are only sitting in their offices wasting time until retirement.

      • I second this comment and this idiot actually got knighted along side deserving people like Ambassador Hadeed help us Lord

    • @ Hmmmmm?!!!, seems like you’re missing the point again!

The citizens of Antigua & Barbuda want solutions to the growing crime rates by a response from the people that govern us.

HOW IS THIS SO DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO COMPREHEND???

You guys are so entrenched in your wilful and erratic views that you cannot see the woods for the trees …

    • In times like these, good leaders, current leaders, opposition leaders, blogging leaders come out and give comfort to the mass. They may even have the intelligence to provide solutions. They may even listen to those who possesses those vitally important and related degrees to give advice.

Leaders may not be able to serve as body guards to an individual but they can surely serve as protectors and supporters of their people.

Even when the people are too stupid enough to realize you are pushing hard to get them them best.

    • If you are an ass one more time Its called crime prevention The police is there for the detection and prevention of crime How do they do that? By putting more police on the streets and seeking intelligent ways to gather information about the movement and modus of criminals. Altlee Rodnee or Cutie is now where close to that!!!

  4. I made similar statement about how wrong and misleading comparing crimes between jurisdiction is

Now this genius and amazing person (it is not me) expressed the same points and other.

    Thank you writer.

Look at my post on the previous article which stated the statistics. I an only now seeing your brilliant post.

    • UGLY AND MY WAY: …NO ILLUSIONS: ..LOW REPORTED CRIMES: …COMFORT FOR FOOLS

There is absolutely nothing ‘UGLY’ about your observations.

      Well said, you both.

Harbor ‘…No Illusions,’ Crime, including ‘MURDER,’ cannot be completely:

      (a) ‘Prevented: and

      (b) …Eliminated.’

That which the social scientists have advised ‘Law enforcers,’ is that it ‘SHALL’ be ‘CONTROLLED’ to a ‘…TOLERABLE LEVEL.’

In other words, the citizens would understand that some crimes cannot be prevented.

Though not solved, and even when solved, it brings no comfort to the victims, who is
of the horrific and traumatic experiences.

The ‘AG’ has, and will always be my good friend, but must still say, sentiments like these, are ‘…COMFORT TO FOOLS.’

Some might just be reading this comment.

Really don’t care how ‘FOOLS’ talk.

      Smoke it.

From a professional perspective, a ‘…High Crime Rate’ within the ‘OECS and CARICOM,’ brings ‘…No Comfort’ to citizens in a Country with a ‘…LOW,’ or the ‘…LOWEST CRIME RATE’

      • @Commisioner Pompey
I think one of the first meetings to form solutions I would encourage is for all living police commissioner, immigration head, military head and national security adviser with capacity to meet experts in the field of social science to discuss policing tactics and other prevention strategies.

I hereby demand with the power I do not have in Antigua but the advance knowledge in this field for such task force to be formed and strategies like my opportunity reduction techniques to be used to decrease vicious crimes in Antigua and Barbuda immediately and in the long run.

The one car patrolling the entire country is no longer sufficient. Patrolling need to be in villages, police vehicle strategically parked in areas and police officers in neighborhood walking at set times.

Please focus on opportunity reduction. Please make presence often but unpredictable.

My idea I provide in a previously published article need to ne used right now.

Designate former officers to be watch and have direct and immediate contact with patrol for that community.

Collect these data, analyze and use it to predict crime patterns and potential future threats. You will need those with advance degree in criminology, policing, and other social science.

        • @helping. Your comment makes a lot of sense. A lot of the armed robberies are occurring in the villages now because the criminals know that the police are mostly patrolling the city. Police presence should probably be increased out of town as well. I would hate to feel like we live in a police state seeing uniforms everywhere, so trusted ones could patrol undercover in plain clothes. If criminals know they might be readily chased by the police they might change their minds about hitting up the little community shops. Communities should also consider building small plazas that are more easily protected for all the businesses instead of having standalone shops. Or, stand alone shops need a redesign (bulletproof glass, emergency buttons, multiple exit doors) to make it harder for criminals to succeed. Finally, job advertisements should be posted frequently in communities so that the unemployed youth can actually see them and realize that they don’t need to commit crimes. There are jobs out there.

  5. Shouldn’t the concern be the year on year increase in these different crimes and not how much lower they are than elsewhere? A 300% increase here in 2 years compared to a 5% elsewhere is more than cause for concern

  6. Antigua can start by rooting out the corruption within the police ranks; there are too many cases of ” turning a blind eye” to individual police misdeeds.
Why is the “protected” officer still wearing his police uniform?

  7. Any agency that is put in place to stop or prevent criminals from overtaking a society has to be the smartest people in the room. When you have criminals out smarting law enforcement, then you have a serious problem, and that’s what’s happening in Antigua right now.
All these Guns that are coming into the island, all these drugs, all these fraudsters, are we saying that these criminals cannot be curtailed?

If that’s what we’re saying(by some of the respondents on her) then we must get smarter people in the room.

Criminals find smarter ways to do their crimes so they won’t get caught(not all of them) so law enforcement must stay ahead of criminals and use the powerful resources of the Govt to push back against crime.

That’s all we are asking for, that’s it. We are not saying that crime can ever be stamped out of society, but when criminals are running rampant without the slightest care in world, then something must be done.

So yes there is such a thing as crime rate, and that crime rate can be brought down significantly with decisive action by law enforcement.
