DEAR EDITOR:

Recent moves and failures in bridging the big gaps in inter-island travel made by the grounding and ultimate demise of LIAT, is causing loss of confidence among travellers. The excellent service record of the LIAT Maintenance over the entire lifetime of the hardworking Caribbean airline is known internationally, as interline agreements with some of the world’s greatest airlines endorsed confidence.

Most glaring are the attempts by a series of non-aviation decisions, which clearly indicate the absence of concerns of the travelling public. The new LIAT which was promised in 2020, has had to drop the 20 because it is now 2024, and the promised of lift off without operating aircraft is causing trepidation, as the public is observing these false starts.

Aviation is not only a complex industry, but the second most dangerous operation in the world after Space Travel, and being mindful that passenger aircraft have no Space Station to pull into when difficulties arise. It follows that the decisions made for this dangerous business require qualified experts with Aviation Regulatory familiarization. Small islands can only produce just a few aviation experts, and must import the expertise, rather than improvising by using finance and other persons who are ignorant of Aviation protocols.

Islands psychologically feel a sense of independence and sovereignty in the wholeness of their small land mass, but all International airports form part of one jurisdiction in Aviation whose independent membership is governed by Rules, Regulations and Transparency. Recognizing that size and capability require some compromise in order to function, the International Regulatory body (ICAO) created a system for inclusion by granting the Registering a Difference. This allows the substitution of measures which satisfy the demands of Safety & Security and cover the stated ICAO requirement which may not be available.

In our current situation resurrecting LIAT, it is clear that the Team is being led by persons to whom establishing an airline is being enacted as just any unregulated business operation. They are not thinking of the breach of confidence which the pronouncements of their failures and false starts is generating among the traveling public. They seem not to be aware that LIAT ( the dead one) had such a great Safety record that the only thing that passengers worried about was its way of Leaving Island Any Time!
