LETTER: ABLP hierarchy needs to be mindful that welcoming former UPP members can cause a conflict of interest

18

Dear Editor

Today, what we see happening with the UPP and its members leaving their party one by one, is certainly not a surprise. In fact,  over the past few years they were forewarned if changes were not made at the top of their organization, then it would be inevitable that the party will implode.

According to one of our great calypsonians or well known social commentator mentioned in one of his songs that ” WHEN THE TOP IS SLACK, THE BOTTOM WILL BE SLACK ALSO “. At the time, the quote was perhaps not applicable to UPP but certainly, it is now, thus we are seeing a disintegration of the UPP political party.

In addition when an organization such as UPP thrives on nepotism, favoritism, lies, bitterness, vendetta as their main mantra to accomplish their political goals then at some point the organization must fail.

At the moment, it is a disgrace and an embarrassment to witness an official opposition political party crumbling in such a manner, as what is happening now. Yet still, the nation is not seeing any strategic move by the opposition to bring about a change or rectify the situation. Soon, we will be seeing many more members resigning including the chairperson who may have to resign from a VOTE of NO CONFIDENCE.

The opposition party needs to get its act together. After the 1971 – 1976 cohort, the opposition has not gotten the right chemistry or ingredients together to make themselves a force to reckon with against the Labour party. They’ve tried UNDP, LUMP, FAITHFUL NATIONALS etc but they have all failed.

Be that as it is, I am of the view that the migration of these UPP members who are now joining ABLP should not be taken lightly by the Labour party hierarchy.

Of course, the movement clearly shows to the populace that ABLP is doing something right for the nation. Numbers is also critical. However, the ABLP hierarchy should put themselves on guard because these new members who were once stalwart members of UPP will be bringing across their UPP philosophical beliefs & doctrines to the table, which can certainly cause a conflict of interest thus resulting in a sway away from the ABLP indeginous “people’s first ” philosophy.

We all know of the cliche that a leopard cannot change its spots. Then can a stalwart supporter of UPP change what’s in his heart? It is only time will tell and to see whether or not that the movement of the UPP members to ABLP is for personal opportunities, nation development or to use ABLP as a vehicle to seek revenge to the political party that they once belong to.

  1. Nice try, but that won’t distract from the fact that Gisele Isaac-Arrindell is the reason why upp crumbling so terribly

  2. the ABLP hierarchy can handle itself. they know how to handle disagreements unlike the UPP.

why did Mr. Pringle refer to Mansoor as MORALLY & FINANCIALLY WEAK?

  3. There are certain points I like in your article, not all but some. Like you acknowledge the harms that can result in bringing over UPP people and then telling an ABLP like me, I cannot help you with basic things. I am no longer ABLP, and the main reason was during the time I heard I cannot help you from ABLP higher-ups they took in a UPP person and gave him a great position, big salary and so much benefits when I simply asked for what I qualify for to be decided on the merit and expeditiously because I want to provide 50 jobs and need that tool to begin work.

But ABLP, AG, PM, COP, Deputy COP all ignored my basic request as a big ABLP supporter and then give UPP member big job, money and much more. I already have a big job, position and money. I did not want not even a dime or job from ABLP, I just needed my full firearms license so I can expand my crime and terrorism victim (administrative law) advocacy firm to Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean and help my clients and provide jobs locally.

There are people that are hurt as me and I hope they are reminded of this when election time comes. Oh, I am no longer a support of ABLP, and family members cannot ask me for any of my money that I work for doing my endeavor that ABLP refuse to provide basic assistance with, if they are still a supporter of ABLP.

No leader should tell a supporter or citizen he cannot help. Do all you can do to help.

  4. This article, though we’ll intended, has some glitches in fact. The defection of young ones like Lamin Newton, the Hon. Anthony Smith, and the resignation of the good Dr. Cleon Athill cannot be considered as stalwarts of the UPP. They were young and easily influenced by the machinations of the UPP, yes I used machinations.

(Then you have Lady Joanne Massiah, whom they chose to expel while she was an elected member in Parliament. Go figure.)

As they gained more knowledge however, they then realized that they were being sold a concept about a person or a party before acquiring the facts.

When it comes to someone like Dr. Edward Mansoor, who was with the party from its inception or thereabouts, and now has chosen to defect, knowing he’s not easily influenced, should be a cause for serious consideration by the leadership.

Now, to suggest that the good doctor he’s defected for personal gains or inducements is highly disrespectful to the character of this accomplished individual.

Yes, he made some regrettable remarks in the heat of the moment in the senate in 2024, for which he has since apologized learning the errors of his actions.

Be that as it may, he continued to be a team player on the side of the opposition to support what he thought was the objective of the party.

He clearly stated that he has had conversations with both former leaders of the party, Dr. Baldwin Spencer and the Prime Minister that never was, Harold Lovell, Esq ( according to Dr. Jacqui Quinn) former Min. of Education.

After having a chat with them both, he realized that the current leadership of the party is in a place of absurdity and toxicity. He therefore, for his own political sanity, could not have continued on this journey and believed that his services and skillset would be better appreciated on the side where he now sees as the only option for growth and development for our country.

I trust the PM and this learned gentleman would find it possible to work together in making a difference towards the next level. 🇦🇬🚩🚩🚩

  5. @LETTER: ABLP hierarchy needs to be mindful et al: Good letter. Pointing out facts or not, that should lead to open and honest insights and reviews on both parts of the political arena of the nation at this critical point in time; when robberies, stabbing, killing, fear, lack of accountability, lack of proper law and order, unhappiness of teachers and other sectors needing to support each other to get results on their fair demands leaving children disappointed at the very start of a school year, increasing food prices seemingly spiraling out of control and more; do not project the importance and priorities that a government (ruling one and opposition) owes to a nation… to the their people. There is a saying: ‘There is a time for everything’ ; this doesn’t seem to be the time for all that we are witnessing today. (Putting aside or under the table the real problems affecting the landscape of the country) maybe while awaiting for new legislation, real solutions and justice to take place. Both sides should be mindful of this and move forward with the people and the real needs in mind and actions as their priority ….. then deal with their re-structuring, defections and proper changes.

  6. Yawn💤😴….Ohh please….both parties been welcoming defectors ffrom ever since…..It will never change…When you don’t have enough to offer people they will eventually look for a better opportunity…

  7. ALP political palette is swiftly turning to Purple. Red + Blue = Purple. Is Blue hyprocritical, contaminating, or complimentary color? Just asking for Donald Trump. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  8. Mansoor will be the candidate for the ALP in rural north. That’s the play.
Power rules the world today, power corrupts they say………..

  9. Fitzroy, don’t be too concerned about those ex UPP pretenders. This is the intention of the ABLP and Top Dog: Bwoy, soon as arwe dun mash up dem party, arwe go tun pan dem wutliss tuncoat like crazy pitbull! Problem for them all though, is that UPP will emerge from this money-driven assault ever stronger than before with new leaders and members more dedicated loyal and patriotic than that bunch being purged by ABLP’s blood money and shallow promises. Let them take their greedy treacherous conniving opportunistic characters into the den of ABLP wolves. Remember time longer than rope. But they’ll live long enough to see and feel the folly of their bad ways.

  10. Good day, Ms Isaac.
Did I hear you say this morning that you took your BAIL MONEY and spent it on UPP?
Should you the Chairman say that on Radio?
Is that why you act as though you own the UPP and all its attachments, including the MPs?

    • YES! A fu SHE party. that y she can say she doan warn no yardie 1st lady in arwee politics

  11. If the ruling party and it’s follower’s will use some of their energy to solve the many unsolved murders in the island, then I think that would be a day well spent, instead of using their lazy pens to write frivolous letters to garner attention.

You and “Gatson useless Browne” and his cabinet leaders need to go solve the crime problems and bring justice to @Manny and the families of the many unsolved murders in our tiny island..

I think that’s a more noble cause, don’t you think Fitzroy?

  12. Mansoor is not interested in running. He does not have the tummuck to take on a campaign season. He is looking for a soft spot, like Parliamentary Secretary for IT, just like what he had in UPP. He acted like if he was a Minister who went and asked for people’s votes. Even used to look down on those who did the hard work. Wants to go back to him and his family raking grabbing and controlling the IT money.

Just something he forgot. Gaston is not Baldwin.
I smell smoke. Look out for the conflagration. Must happen

  13. @Eldred, well said. Fitzroy so wants to sound relevant, he hops all over the place.
I don’t see how all this UPP bashing is of any benefit to the nasty, dilapidated, high cost of living, no water,220 million dollar deficit, crime infested country.
UPP is being purged of all deceitful, conniving, treacherous, money grabbing, unconscionable, despicable elements. Our country abounds with them and this has to stop for the future of this nation.
We need good, principled, honorable men and women in our politics, not this abundance of riffraffs.

  14. woah! Fitzroy really touch you corn jack. You see the upp is just a “party” whereas the Labour Party is an INSITUTION!!! note the difference. coming together to be spiteful, vindictive, jealous and badminded to ABLP was not a good foundation for upp to stand on. The people of Antigua and Baburda and the world at large get to see what the upp is made of – rotten to the core, with maggots seeping out and a fecal stench. Run for the hill before the lipstick-wearing hog tramples you to death.
