Let them starve if they can’t cook, Deacon tells parents

NEWS784: Church deacon Winfield Cumberbatch is advocating that parents practice tough love on their children in an effort to get them to cook and do other chores at home.

Cumberbatch, who is the Head Deacon at the Glad Tidings Tabernacle at Gomea, was at the time delivering the sermon on types of parenting during a worship service last Sunday.

“Parents, bring them in the kitchen let them cook their own food; otherwise, let them starve,” he told parents.

“Look at some of them fingernails and see if they can wash wares,” Deacon Cumberbatch said in an apparent reference to young girls and women with very long artificial fingernails.

The Glad Tidings Tabernacle Head Deacon said that there are parents who go to work and when they return home they have to wash the wares their children use because the children do not wash them.

He said that at age 11, when his mother died, he was able to “cook the basic things.” He said that in those days, the 1950s, food prepared were mainly callaloo soup, boil-up, peas soup, roast breadfruit or doughboy.

The Head Deacon also said that at that age he could wash his cloths because when they went to the river his parents allowed him to wash his own clothes on a stone. He said that these days what you find are parents washing children’s clothes even with the availability of washing machine while the children are in their bedrooms occupied with the use of cellphones and other gadgets.

“And they crawl out to eat and they crawl back in,” he said, causing a ripple of laughter in the congregation.

Deacon Cumberbatch said that because parents fail to teach children how to do things in preparation for adulthood, some young women face problems in their relationships because they can’t do anything.

“And a lot of you parents, sometimes, should take the blame because you allow them to have their own way,” Deacon Cumberbatch said.

  1. This is sort of true, but I’m not so sure about this Deacon guy. Something isn’t quite right. Watch him closely.
