Back in 2003 among the prominent names were Mount Gay Rum and Stanford Financial, Cavalier Rum was a specatator and Mount Gay Rum sponsered regattas fron San Diago to Block Island. Wives were walking into wine stores asking for Mount Gay Rum hoping to suprise their husbands
The product catogory of “English Harbour Rum” aged rum is a branding success that is unparalled in Antigua and Barbuda.
As a crew member for a couple of years in the Classic Regatta on the 00s; there so are many troubling things about Antigua Sail Week. I recalled as we cruised into the Dock Yard, passing the judges platform and the adjacent dignitary viewers not one black person in sight. The Mount Gay Party offered the locals a bit of revalry; but that too had its hiarchy where only crew member were allowed behind the rope with the food and Mount Gay; and at which point each crew member reiceved a red Mount Gay cap.
As I tool around in the bay each summer myself and other sailors are able to recognise by the insignia on our caps what regattas we have partiscipated in.
I hope the next move is to create crew caps with the map of Antigua similar to the Mouny Gay cap which has traveled the world resulting in the branding and promotion and market recognition that has taken both the product Mount Gay Rum and Barbados into a global market
replacing Mount Gay as the sponsering
English Harbour rum is superb, it’s the only rum that I’ll pour a snifter of and just sip like a fine Bourbon.
Sailing and fine rum, you folks got it made 🙂
