Lennox Weston: Am I the only one outraged?

By Lennox Weston

I read the papers just before Christmas and a simple short story of a young woman, age 20 years going to SLBMC Government sole Public Hospital to give birth.  The news reported that the mother died, and the baby was subsequently discharged. CLICK HERE TO JOIN ANR WHATS APP GROUP

I waited and waited for several days and now several weeks to see if there would have been some public announcement on what transpired since our health care system has come such a long way that a young woman going to give birth Is expected to have a successful delivery and of course, not die during the process.

A baby dying during delivery and a mother dying giving birth is a very rare occurrence in most modern health care systems, including ours here in Antigua and Barbuda. Therefore, there ought to be, and there is public interest in what transpired.

First, to make the changes to ensure whatever happened didn’t happen again, and to provide public education for future pregnant women and their families and other health care providers.

So, without any public explanation, any public comments from hospital officials or government Ministers or any public images of officials comforting the family members of the deceased as occurred at Devils Bridge when a tourist lost two family members from a drowning accident, speculation reigns, reducing confidence in the services of the sole public hospital.

The public is left to speculate without any information as to whether it was a complex pregnancy   or a high-risk pregnancy, whether all necessary specialists and professionals were in attendance to ensure a safe delivery of the child and the safety of the mother and whether there are lessons that can be learned for public health, for other pregnant Mother’s or by other health care providers.

Young women ought not to die from giving birth and if, and when it occurs, there should be some public explanation as to what went wrong and what public lessons can be learnt to prevent similar situation from re occurring.

The silence is unacceptable. The public must demand an answer and explanation from hospital officials, public health officials, and health ministry officials.

It has not gone without notice that the correction of the plumbing at the SLBMC has taken an extraordinary long time, making the operating rooms in operable reducing quality of health care at the facility increasing the risk of infection the deadliest factor in post operation care.CLICK HERE TO JOIN ANR WHATS APP GROUP

We have seen the slow pace of restoration of full cancer care by sorting out the cancer center legal conflict.

The lives of our people are precious. The lives of our mothers and their babies are precious. We expect and demand first world health care quality service and open transparent communication with the public on health matters. We are all at risk without it.

A young mother died giving birth at our sole public hospital without a public explanation and announcement of corrective actions. This is unacceptable. We all should all be outraged.

Let us fix this, now!

Lennox Weston

A maternal death is defined by World Health Organization WHO as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy.

WHO has set a target of 70 per 100000 for all countries by 2030 as part of the UN Ssustainability Development Goals. Antigua Barbuda has outperformed most countries in the world but still has some distance to travel to reach the standard in most developed countries.

Antigua Barbuda according to World Bank report maternal mortality rate in 2021 was twenty-one per one hundred thousand100000 0r in percentage terms 0.021 percent of mothers die when pregnant and giving birth. A rare and almost nonexistent occurrence here, which is the precise reason a public explanation is required. CLICK HERE TO JOIN ANR WHATS APP GROUP

Center for Disease Control CDC says eighty percent of maternal mortality is preventable since it is linked to poverty and lack of access to proper medical care. Care by skilled professionals before during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborns.

Seventy-five percent of all maternal deaths occur because of complications with severe bleeding after childbirth, infections usually after childbirth, high blood pressure during pregnancy, complications from delivery and unsafe abortions.CLICK HERE TO JOIN ANR WHATS APP GROUP

In the USA mental illness and lack of access to proper health care by minority Ethnic groups have resulted in maternal mortality rate like Antigua and much higher than developed countries.

Antigua And Barbuda cannot allow this hard-earned accomplishment to slip. No woman should die giving life. It is an outrage; the public deserves to have an explanation.

  1. It is foolish for anyone to believe that child birth is run of the mill & quite ordinary. The expectation is that a woman that gives birth & survives is breaking the odds. There’s nothing ordinary about child birth and the expectation shouldn’t be oh it’s just child’s birth so Mom will be fine. That’s foolish thinking. There are complications associated with pregnancy & birth. So many things can go wrong. You obviously don’t know what happened and this article is written by a clueless uninformed person who has no facts regarding this incidence.
Thankfully it’s rare to hear about a Mother dying while giving birth but it happens daily in the world.
The fact that you haven’t heard about this particular case it’s because it’s PRIVATE & the family knew the risk so there’s NO SMOKING GUN to blame anyone for the unfortunate death.
Death is inevitable and constant. It happens at anytime.
    Motherhood should be celebrated daily.
If men suffered the pain of childbirth the world would be under populated.
Thankfully in Antigua our numbers are low for
Maternal mortality it proves that our health care system is working quite well.

    • @smoking.

This is a pure garbage rebuttal to the concerns the writer eluded to.
This article is about information seeking, and not one that has cast blame on anyone, so you should be the one that should learn to read and article what the writer is putting forth.

      Pure garbage!!!

  2. Your voice real loud now for something other than to hear yourself cuss everybody how dem dunce and you bright like North Star. SMH what a difference an election makes. You made a mockery of Public Works with your ridiculous spending that lined the pockets of a select demographic. You had grandiose ideas but absolutely no idea what it would take to execute them! Thankfully the people retired you in the interest of saving the country.

To be fair to you, this is probably one on the only time I agree with you and I want to express my sincere condolences to the family of that young lady. I hope the Minister of health hears the cry and responds appropriately. I’m not gonna hold my breath

  3. I definitely agree with this article and assessment.

Inquiring minds really wants to know. We must be better professionals in the Caribbean, of we are going to be professional at dat.

Too many times information is lacking in our news feed with followup journalist investigation.

The information of the entire matter is there, so it’s up to the journalist to get it and deliver it to the concerned public.

Where is the government interest in this kind of transparency?

    Bwoi a tell you sah!!!

  4. Mr. Weston, tell the Minister of Health to give you a job as the Secretary of Health in the ministry of Health and or the PR Officer in the Department. Not everybody can be minister, so go and present yourself as a outraged citizen and champion for the people you once served. Action speaks louder than words.

  5. @SmokenMirrors – I think you are missing the point of this opinion piece (I believe on purpose). What I gather is that an otherwise healthy 20+ year old died from complications after giving birth and the country moves on like is just another day. Everyone knows that there are risks but we don’t just say “oh well” and move on when someone dies…especially at a hospital. She didn’t deliver the baby at home!!

This is the problem with Antigua….no one holds anybody accountable. Anything goes and because it’s not us we us foolish anecdotal quotes like “death is constant”. We know death is inevitable but no one expects a healthy 20 year old to die in a hospital in 2023 from giving birth.

I agree some sort of statement needs to be made to ease the anxiety of the public.

  6. While I see the point being made, aren’t their limits to what medical information can be shared due to doctor/patient confidentiality?

  7. I am no supporter of any ALP former or previous, but Weston is spot on.
This is not the only thing that has happened in the last 10 years that demands an explanation but is quickly pushed aside.
Police shooting citizens running away, nothing; Airplane bring a thousand Africans here without proper documentation and they float around our country then disappear, nothing; Africans die attempting to enter US territory by boat, the compromised GG sat in his a$$ and refused to call a public inquiry; nothing; Dunbars is being desecrated for housing and Tek Greek has nothing to say; barrels are removed from containers under cover of night; nothing.
This is the most tiefing, corrupt, greedy government ever in the history of this country. Big up Choko .

    • @ Watching…..We all watching and making the necessary adjustments my friend.
Antigua has become a place of the wild wild wild west where the motto is MTABW.
Money talks and Bu****it walks. Its a place where you do the crime and with time it slides like slime. The police is the law and is above the law. Police are the ones now who are under cover committing the crimes too, imagine that, now the robbers posing like police to rob, what a joke. I agree 100 percent with you, This is the most tiefing, corrupt, greedy government ever in the history of this country.

  8. Mr. Weston makes good points about the importance of adequate communication and the article is written quite well. Appreciate seeing the statistics that help to put everything into context. If the patient had a prior medical condition they could say so without going into private details. Or, if they don’t know what happened, they could say that.

  9. Whilst it is important for us to have statistics and understand how well written are doing as a nation it is important for our health officials to communicate with us and to receive valuable feedback. There’s nothing wrong in us wanting to make “dying giving birth” a thing of the past as our health programs and facilities improve.

  10. I never forget when my first child was born. I almost lost my girlfriend. She did not pass the afterbirth and they left here bleeding until the next day. They wanted blood urgently and took blood from me and gave to her. The nurses were trembling like leaves. No doctor was available. Death loomed the atmosphere. Thank God we survived.
In today’s health care system, this should not happen. Did she have pre natal care before going to the hospital for delivery is the most important question to me ?

    • Samething happened to me. Only one nurse delivered the baby and placenta was left inside which caused septic and I almost died . Pure negligence coupled with mismanagement .there must be accountability at all times , this is Abt life and death

  11. Lenox very well written. You did not hide under a secret name. I believe that one of your critics
Under a private name is GB .
You were once the PS in Agriculture. Please Day something about how the government is disrespecting the agriculture workers. It is not about the repurposing but the way it should be done. Lied Hurst in his cabinet briefing was even more disrespectful. He sounded like he was sending threats to the agriculture workers.
The only person that sounded intelligent on this issue is the head research lady.
Lenox please comment- if not an entire article. Happy new year to you and family.

  12. There’s no doubt, that Lenox Weston is a controversial person. His present public outburst has more to do with transparency and hypocrisy, by public officials, #WHO’RE charged with managing the public affairs. Heck, when is news, in the Governing of Our Nation. Public officials consider themselves to immuned from criticism to prosecution, for their lack of accountability to the same public, that pays their salaries.

In regards, to the transparency issue; no one, in their right mind wants the officials from the hospital, to divulge the private health history, of this young lady. It’s simply a matter of professionalism, for the authorities to come to the public and allay their fears, regarding this sudden death.
Next is the hypocrisy, by our public officials which again, is nothing new. However, Weston still felt the need to bring it, to the public’s attention, as he mentioned, the double drowning of the Canadians at Devil’s Bridge, and the reaction(s) by public officials, in the immediate aftermath.

Weston, the ONLY way for the Nation to get better transparency and accountability, better respect, regardless of race, class or creed; is not only, to keep doing what you’re doing, but to be more public with it, to have better PUBLIC DISCUSSIONS, on these vexing issues which not only plagues, but haunts Our Nation of Antigua, Barbuda & REDONDA.

I’m quite sure, that Antigua Newsroom would not hesitate, to give your concerns #Time and #Space in this forum. Heck, it could possibly revive your dead political career like a Phoenix 🕊️carrying, an olive branch, to save Our Nation from this budding APARTHEID REGIME of the Gaston Browne led ABLP Government!

  13. Let’s not focus on the writers past and focus on the message and inquiry being brought forward as this is important. It is important for our public to get answers too often we allow ourselves to be left in the dark about what happens in our country until another heartbreaking unexplainable situation occurs…… let’s ask these questions everytime until the standard becomes proving us an explanation, providing us with options with a chance

  14. Well said Mr. Weston.

In Antigua only certain people seemingly can get fired but I know the Almighty God still sit on his Throne and in his time ALL will get the reward of what they sowed.

    Congrats again Mr. Weston.

  15. The guess the carrot juice 💉is not the probable cause of all these cardiac arrests, heart attacks, aneurysms, strokes, heavy bleeding, turbo cancers , clots, auto immune diseases, leukocytosis etc etc. But hey, I just do my research and read the facts released from the supreme court in the US, the data being released from various parts of the world etc. The population should ask questions. Hold the same people that shot that juice into your veins responsible. Looking forward to the day that they will be prosecuted.

  16. The communication and procedures may not have been kosher, but now I give to the speaker some credibility.

  17. The article is a well penned one by Mr Weston and the silence of both the Health Minister and the authorities at the Hospital is deafening. Most maternal mortality is unacceptably in this day and age.
The vast majority of maternal deaths are preventable, as the health-care solutions to prevent or manage complications are well known. All women need access to high quality care in pregnancy, and during and after childbirth. Maternal health and newborn health are closely linked. It is particularly important that all births are attended by skilled health professionals, as timely management and treatment can make the difference between life and death for the women as well as for the newborn.
I am not a physician but I am widely read. Women die as a result of complications during and following pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these complications develop during pregnancy and most are preventable or treatable. Other complications may exist before pregnancy but are worsened during pregnancy, especially if not managed as part of the woman’s care. The major complications that account for nearly 75% of all maternal deaths are:

    * severe bleeding (mostly bleeding after childbirth);
    * infections (usually after childbirth);
    * high blood pressure during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia);
    * complications from delivery
Women give birth daily and we seldom hear of instances today when either mother or child dies during the process.
The Ministry of Health and the Hospital owe it to the relatives of this young woman and to the citizenry at large to say exactly what happened

  18. Well sah! Lennox Weston want relevance, while he was feeding on steaks and milk and honey he had no voice, but now he is out of that luxurious position he have mouth to talk, to endear himself as a martyr for the people, play with the people emotions to get to power again then put on his blinders. Non a them dear talk against Gaston because of the pack they made to extract monies to their person for enrichment as Gaston and them sat in a private home meeting and said, that upp kept them out there for a long ten years and starved of from the kitty, and so a brotherhood has been form with this latest generation of ALP politicians, and it’s a surprise how they got these white guys to approach Arthur nibbs in some overseas meeting and agree to be a senior political figure on Barbuda to lead the land sell out, he is now sitting on some warm change and conscience, In nostagia Arthur nibbs will always look back on his time of seeing Barbuda as natures secret, which he will sit old and require sea bath for his old bones and at that time the no trespassing signs and fence beach shall make him regret his actions today he made with Gaston. The white people gave you pretty paper, and they took the land that is forevermore, not to be seen by a black race again.
