Leadership Matters: Barbados Lowers Petrol Prices, Antigua Raises Them (LETTER)

GASTON and MIA

Dear Editor,

In times of global crisis, strong leadership really does matter. I listened to the news  from Barbados, Prime Minister, the Honourable Mia Mottley, has not only stabalized her country’s finances, but, she has put Barbados in such a strong position that during a global oil crisis, she is able to lower oil prices in her country.

On the other hand, here in Antigua & Barbuda, our people awoke to gas prices today on World Consumer Right Day to gas prices  $3 higher. That’s weak and failed leadership.

In times of crisis, we need experienced managers who know how to see us through difficult times. I have all confidence that Harold Lovell and the UPP would have done better.

I recall the fateful year of 2009, Harold Lovell then finance minister, in that capacity, he had to deal with:

  • the global financial crisis,
  • the CLICO collapse,
  • the Stanford collapse
  • the British American insurance collapse.                                                                      And, through all of that, the UPP built reverse osmosis plants and tanks to improve the water situation, introduced the school meals programme, the laptops for children, the school uniform programme and  much more.

It is now clear that Gaston Browne has failed the peoples trust. The fire in Point showed that, There was no water in the hydrant and a fire truck had to be called in from all the way in All Saints because all the other trucks at the repair shop waiting for simple parts.

He himself said that although the new trucks were ordered they didn’t pay for them. A sign that there was no money to pay until disaster struck 5 families who have no place to shelter and have to start life all over again.

All of this from a leader who denied people the right to choose and denied them jobs and education.

We deserve better.

  1. Two things I find interesting regarding the rise in fuel prices.
    1) When the price per barrel was low, Antigua’s price was kept high to the consumer.
    2) The oil company here recently said we have six months of reserves in storage.

This appears to be a policy of exploitation of the citizens of Antigua.

  2. Well said, and very much on point.

Again, Mia Mottley has stolen the prime ministers thunder; like she did with her excellent speech in Scotland a few months back , in front of other world leaders … 👏

    • I don’t know much about Mia Mottley (Motley Crew… sorry, I couldn’t resist)

I guess you’re referring to the COP26 meeting for Climate Change. IMO, those that attended that meeting (including Gaston Browne & ABLP representatives) swore allegiance to the NWO when they pledged allegiance for Net Zero (GFANZ), and other SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT policies of Klaus Schwab’s WEF (Fueling the 2030 agenda of the NWO)

      • Yes Angel, that there is another agenda regarding the so-called COP26 summit in Scotland.

However, Mia Mottley has shown that she’s a cut above Gaston Browne when it comes to putting her citizens and Barbados 🇧🇧 first.

        • They’re all nearly as bad as each other, once they’ve signed up to globalists’ ‘net zero’ and the ‘climate change’ scams. Browne however prefers grovelling to foreign interests chasing $$$ to his own people.

………..and then we went to the IMF!!!

    NO THANKS!!!!!

    #SAYNOTOHAROLD#

    • It sound to me that you just made a positive case for the SUCCESS of Harold Lovell & the UPP.
So, why did you conclude by removing your support for Harold Lovell & the UPP?
Because of they went to the IMF?
OK, that is NEVER a smart move, I’ll admit right here.
Another criticism could be that they made the mistake trying to pay down the previous administration’s debt too quickly and they ran into a cashflow problem. (hence the need for the IMF)

  4. Unless you follow blindly like some sheep’s on here you would easily know that Mia Mottley is the Caribbean best leader both regionally and on the world stage.
    A class act and study.

  5. MR. IMF ROMANTIC RHYTHMS WADADLI POWER CAN’T ABST HOTEL RIPOFF

Yeah I know who King Lyadd Lovell Limpy Joe is. No amount of Grasping at straws and desperate last minute tactics can erase the core of the Worst Finance Minister!!!

Too much “blood on his hands” to try now and appear to be some messianic figure.

Lovell is a SPENT FORCE and will serve him well to ride off into the sunset on the Wilmoth Daniel STRIPPER POLE BUS 🚌

    • Do you just cut and paste everyday? Lawd you can’t change it up likkle bit for entertainment purposes? Are you a robot or a real person? I believe you are a robot. But even so change your battery, do something different nah?

      • An ABLP supporter. No common sense. No vision. No imagination. So lazy. So boring
smh. hmmmmm, well well well, really- one person pretending to be different people.
THINKS THAT BY CUTTING AND PASTING THE SAME THING FOUR TIMES A DAY THAT HE WILL BE CONVINCING PEOPLE.
        YAWN, YAWN, YAWN

  6. Since when West Indies Oil is governed by foreign entities? I ask this because sanctions placed on Russia is the reason for the high prices in oil/gasoline, also given the fact we do not depend on foreign counterparts for oil/gasoline due to our relationship with West Indies oil. So I beg to ask why is there an increase in the above mentioned, when:
    1. We do not depend on first world countries for oil and gasoline.
    2. Our prices have not once reflected the global market sales for oil and gasoline.
    3. The price of gas has been the same despite the various rise and fall in fuel costs.

    • WIOC controls a oil field here and also a refinery? If you know basic economics you would understand that supply impacts prices? Well there is a shortage (at least a feared one) due to the issue in Ukraine, hence prices have increased. Our sources for fuel are seeing increased demand from new clients, hence higher prices. If you follow the news you would learn that the US is now looking at getting more oil from Venezuela, hence they are looking at easing sanctions there

  7. Its a pity some persons prefer to stay in the dark. Barbados raised the price of gas at the pump by 14 cents per litre effective the 6th of March, 2022. Currently their price for gas per gallon stands at a little over 25 ec per imperial gallon. The 14 cents bds reduction equates to no more than 1 EC. They have now taken back the same increase and imposed new taxes to make up for the 25 million shortfall. Pandemic levy of 15% will be imposed on businesses, Persons making more than some 6K BDs per month will now be faced with a 1% pandemic levy on their income. Commercial customers (eg restaurants) will see an increase in their fuel price. Since BDS is the model for some, should the GB led admin follow BDS and set our gas price to be inline with BDS (some 2r4 ec per gallon) and impose similar new taxes ?

  8. Mottled lower gas price Gaston carry up gas price and Antigua 🇦🇬 gas still cheaper do the math

  9. ABLP Ministers soiled record;

  11. I paid $3.25 per gallon for gas today. While many of you are trying to defend the increases in Antigua and Barbuda. Those increases affects everyone,ABLP,ALP,GBLP,and UPP all alike. Unless you are driving a Government owned vehicle with freeeee, gas.I wondered if all of those red soldiers would be paying $15.70 for a gallon of Gas. Tenman:Do you drive a Government issued Car? I am very much aware that are you lob too much FREEBS.

  12. Barbadians earning more than $6,250 per month and businesses that emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic largely unscathed will have to contribute to the $1 billion bill for Government’s COVID-19 fight.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley said the “one-off” payments, which are expected to raise a total of $120 million, would be taken as a pandemic contribution levy of one per cent of an individual’s income every month for a year; while businesses in the telecommunications, commercial banking and general and life insurance sectors, and the retail of petroleum products, will pay 15 per cent of their net income over an eight-month period.

The tax for workers with earnings over the threshold will take effect from April 1.

  13. There are many Americans grappling with skyrocketing gas prices in recent weeks, but those in the United States aren’t alone.

Many countries have it far worse, and those citizens are likely having an even harder time with it.

According to data from globalpetrolprices.com, 46 countries have gas prices that are $6 a gallon or more, 26 have prices that are at least $7 a gallon, and eight countries have gas prices that are $8 a gallon or more.
Now, calculate those prices into EC, and see where we are with gas prices. Fact is, we have nothing to complain about when considering other rich countries with their high gas prices. You always have to think of the equivalent of the currency, like when we decide to shop online in America. Our price does seems high to us no doubt, but convert the 15.70 into US, and you’ll be paying the same for gas in California. I’m trying to get a diesel vehicle. Fuel last longer, and England is selling their diesel vehicles cheap at the moment.
