Attorney Defends Role in Representing Accused in Child Killing Case

Attorney Wendel Alexander has moved to defend his decision to represent 20-year-old Angela Mahia, who is charged with the killing of nine-year-old Chantel Crumb, amid growing public criticism and protests.

Alexander confirmed that he was retained by Mahia’s family and emphasized that every accused person is constitutionally entitled to legal representation. He acknowledged the public outrage surrounding the case but underscored that the fairness of the trial must not be undermined.

Mahia’s appearances in court have been marked by heavy security, with the young defendant clad in a bulletproof vest in response to threats of vigilante action. The case has ignited national debate, with some fearing that hostile public remarks could compromise the integrity of the proceedings.

Legal experts warn that if public sentiment is seen as jeopardizing Mahia’s right to a fair trial, her defense team could mount a constitutional challenge. Such a move, if successful, might even result in her release.

The killing of Chantel Crumb has deeply shaken Antigua and Barbuda. The Grace Farm resident and Five Islands Primary School student was abducted in March while walking home with friends. She was taken only steps from her house, and three days later, her body was discovered in bushes at Weather Hills.

Investigators allege that Mahia was involved in the crime, which has fueled widespread anger and demands for justice. Despite the intense emotions, Alexander has maintained that the legal process must be allowed to take its course, with the outcome determined by the court.

  1. It’s the sloppyness of the police we are worried about ❗ how expressing how u feel can jeopardize the case when ppl are just simply expressing hurt not spreading rumors of what happened

  2. this i don’t understand, why does a lawyer have to defend his position for representing a young lady charge with murder? when constitution gives her the right to legal counsel. are we saying that no one should represent us. then state would have to get her representation with tax payers money.

  3. I’ve been saying this the moment it went viral that she has a representative and to which she is entitled to. However, antiguans are so quick to think out their asses and run their mouths. Justice will prevail, let the man do his job. I’m not worried about her lawyer I’m worried about the sloppy work of the police officers who might judge let this girl walk free.

  4. People kill in Antigua, because they know they can get away with it, why, because of a “weak fence” called “Sir Knighted Cutie Benjamin”.

He is the most inept AG in all of the Caribbean, and his officers and judiciary is as soft as him, and take the lead from this soft AG.

So there it is people. If officers can gun down citizens and no accountability for such, well that slackness will also trickle down through their investigations.

Sloppy work all the way around.

With no clear pathology as to the cause of Chantels murder, I wouldn’t be surprised if this girl walk free. Others have walked free with less.

I’m just so sorry for what Chantels family is going through. My heart goes out to them.
