Labour Relations Consultant Henderson Bass says he is at a loss to understand why revisions to the Labour Code have not been taken before the Parliament up to now.
Bass served as a member of the National Labour Board (NLB), which was tasked with revision of the Code. He says the body had all but completed the exercise, save and except for Section D, which deals with Health, Safety and Welfare.
When the current Labour Minister, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, took office back in 2014, that section was the only one left incomplete, he says.
Since then, there have been talks of a further revision of the Labour Code, which Bass believes is unnecessary.
It remains unclear why the Government is taking so long to take the revised Code to Parliament – even after assurances were given by the Minister Benjamin in 2019.
Bass says that without the revised Labour Code, he does not see how issues related to industrial action can move forward properly.
