Minister of Legal Affairs, Public Safety & Labour Steadroy Benjamin and Labour Commissioner Mrs Eltonia Anthony Rojas are expected to attend two high ranking, momentous meetings in host country Barbados.

The  Meeting of OECS Ministers with responsibility for Labour immediately precedes the 11th International Labour Organization (ILO) Meeting of Caribbean Ministers of Labour.

The Commission proposes the convening of the First Meeting of the OECS Council of Ministers of Labour on the eve of the 11th ILO Meeting of Caribbean Ministers of Labour, scheduled for 14 -15 May, 2019 in Barbados.

The attendance by Ministers at the ILO Meeting presents an ideal opportunity to convene the Meeting of OECS Council of Ministers of Labour at the same venue on Monday 13th May 2019.

A letter from the OECS stated that the Commission considers a meeting of OECS Labour Ministers to be long overdue. Among the many priority matters which have been identified for consideration by Ministers. the Commission proposes that this first meeting focuses on the participation of OECS Member States in the Canada Temporary Worker Program, and the major challenges and opportunities facing their Ministries of Labour and the ECLS under that Program. In this regard. the Commission recommends that those matters be considered by Ministers with the heightened urgency that is required at this critical juncture in the Member States’ participation in the Program.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) through its Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Partnership Relations in Barbados, is the host of the Eleventh Sub-regional ILO Meeting of the Caribbean Labour Ministers scheduled for May 14th to May 15th  2019.  The meeting is expected to bring together Ministers of Labour from the ILO’s 13 Member States and nine (9) non-metropolitan territories of the English and Dutch Speaking Caribbean.

A letter from the Director of the ILO’s Decent work team and office for the Caribbean stated that the ILO’s Director-General Mr. Guy Ryder will be present at the Eleventh Sub-regional ILO Meeting of Caribbean Labour Ministers.

The meeting celebrates the ILO’s 100th Anniversary and offers an opportunity for the Ministers of Labour to Chart the way forward addressing issues around the Future of Work in the Caribbean. The letter also stated that leaning on the ILO’s Centenary flagship report on the future of work, the theme of the Meeting is “Shaping a Brighter Future of Work for the Caribbean.

The Hon. Minister Steadroy Benjamin and the Labour Commissioner Mrs. Eltonia Rojas attendance to both meetings will aid in strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s relationship with its ILO member states, fortify the importance of preserving and moulding the Labour structure within the Caribbean, during discussions among member states.
