La-Shanti Cooper Remanded to Prison Due to Insufficient Funds for Bail in Fatal Accident Case

REAL NEWS: La-Shanti Cooper, the young woman who was charged for the accident-related death of her best friend, Keane Gregoire of Nut Grove, has been remanded to His Majesty’s Prison since she was unable to meet the cash deposit of her bail.

On Wednesday, May 31, Cooper appeared in the St. John’s Magistrates Court, where – among other conditions – Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh imposed bail of $100,000 with a cash component of $20,000.

A source says that Cooper’s family made a good effort to raise the funds before the end of the workday, but they fell $5,000 short of the amount required.

As a result, the teenager will remain in prison until the full $20,000 can be raised and paid into the court to secure her release.

Cooper, a former student of the Ottos Comprehensive School, is facing five charges: driving without a license; driving without insurance; causing death by dangerous driving; driving without the required “L” plates affixed to the front and back of the vehicle; and driving without a licensed driver next to her, as the law stipulates.

Allegedly, the young woman was behind the wheel of the car that crashed and claimed the life of 18-year-old Gregoire, an Ottos Comprehensive School student.

The Police are alleging that Cooper was traveling at a high speed when she lost control of the vehicle, causing the car to skid off the All Saints Road before colliding with a concrete column.

The accident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, and Gregoire succumbed to his injuries on Friday, May 19, shortly after midnight.

Cooper’s mother, Corporal Tulip Horsford, a veteran police officer, has been charged for allowing her daughter, an unlicensed driver, to operate her car.  Both cases have been adjourned to August 10.

Earlier reports that the pair had been charged with perverting the course of justice have not been substantiated.

  1. Two things here of note. (1) If the passenger was sleeping, then who were you trying to impress by driving so fast or was she racing someone? (2) if she wasn’t racing and impressing no one, then substance was involved here, the only reason she would be going at such rate of speed. In any case my condolences to the young man’s family! Locking her up can’t bring back this young man, but this mother better look real hard on the mirror I plead to God for mishandling of her parenting skills that cause one the young man to loose his life, and two for her daughter’s life to be impacted in such a negative way. Good parenting is still very important, and just let your children lead instead of you leading is on the parent. Her daughter ask her for the car,but because never practice to tell her daughter NO, she is also blame here. Smdh. Like the king told his son in the movie Gladiator ” your short coming are as much to do with my own sins”

  2. This is very sad. If the mother had any idea this would happen she would have acted differently. My condolences to the young man’s family and I believe the young lady would be in a state too, she lost her best friend

    • The consequences of both the mother and daughter’s reckless behaviour caused a young man to lose his life. Additionally, the drive ignored speed limits, speed limits are in place for a purpose, which does involve unlicensed drivers to be driving without supervision.
The actions of Tulip et al are what is affecting Antigua, whereby young people behaving without care for themselves, others and the law. For once the magistrates seems to have taken the right stance by reminding the young lady to prison and hopefully she will remain there. In addition, the Police Service should show Tulip the door, the service should cleanse itself from corrupt officers.

(ii) …He did see or meet neither ‘…Mother, nor Daughter’ driving the vehicle:

        BE STILL AND KNOW.

        • @Rawlston Pompey…

Are you certain, that the mother cannot be charged, under any circumstances, such as obstruction of justice, tampering with evidence, giving false statements etc?

Now, Pompey are you speaking from a point of having all of the facts, statements from witnesses, phone records(texts, voice, cell towers) etc?

  3. Condolences are in order, to the bereaved.

Do law enforcement collect blood and urine at the scene, of the accident from the driver(s), during their initial investigations at the scene?
The reason is, Antigua’s saturated with alcohol and drugs(legal & illegal) which have proven to impair drivers.

  4. I am really sorry for the young man who lost his young life it is very heart breaking. I am sorry for the daughter some what because this could have all been avoided if her officer of the law mother didn’t spoil her and encouraged her to break the law which she swore an oath to serve. This should be a reminder to all officers to dismiss the idea of thinking it’s ok to break the law at their convenience. Yes you are a Police but you are also not above the law you serve…
