Reigning Calypso Monarch King Zachari has been critical of the Festivals Commission for changes to the carnival which sees calypso moving from the Sunday to the Friday.
He has labeled members of the commission who took the decision as “stupid” and says it was done to spite calypsonians.
“Them so want stifle the voice of a calypsonian,” he told Pointe FM
The monarch added, “them smart lakka some cocks.”
He said many people already planned their travels to arrive in Antigua on Friday anticipating that the Calypso Monarch Competition will be on Sunday.
He says the changes now mean many visitors won’t see the calypso show.
“People will leave wherever they come from on a Friday evening land in Antigua, go to the soca monarch on a Saturday and calypso on Sunday,” Zachari said.
He told radio listerns that the decision was driven by greed.
“You know the whole thing why they did this, they looking for gate receipts. Carnival never make no profit. carnival never have no profit,” the king said.
He said the changes will also mean bad for the soca artists.
“What they do is sabotage them own soca show because there is a fete them soca people have to attend to on the same Sunday morning.”
