Former Calypso King Tyrone “Edimelo” Thomas was remembered as a loving husband and father at a thanksgiving service for his life today.
Thomas was also hailed for his contributions to the development to Antigua and Barbuda’s music and culture.
Daryl Matthew, the Minister of Culture was among those who offered tributes at the service, which was held at St. John’s Cathedral.
“I’m proud to say Edimelo was my friend. We did not agree on every issue but Edimelo was the individual who would be directing his speech and yet remain friendly”, Matthew said.
Former Culture Minister, E. P. Chet Greene invoked one of Thomas’ calypso hits as he “implore us as a people, in these changing times, to never lose sight of who we are. Don’t ever turn our backs on our culture”.
King Edimelo won the calypso monarch title in 2006 and again in 2013. He died at age 59 on April 17.
