Press Release

The Antigua & Barbuda Employers’ Federation held an Extra-Ordinary General Meeting of its membership on Thursday 16th September 2021 via Zoom, to discuss and formulate a position by which they could be guided in mitigation against the effects of current Covid-19 Pandemic to businesses and the economy.

The members present expressed full support for the Government’s position on “PUBLIC
HEALTH ACT (DANGEROUS INFECTIOUS DISEASE) (AMENDMENT) (NO. 16)
REGULATIONS 2021 STATUTORY INSTRUMENT 2021, NO. 85, A 5” as amended, to
curtail the spread of COVID-19 within the country, as presented on 16th September 2021.

The members further agreed to request that the government’s position of mandatory vaccination be extended nationwide i.e., mandatory for public and private sector employees.

By the Government legislating this through statutory instruments, employers will have a legal basis supporting the decisions we must take to manage our organizations’ affairs during the pandemic.

The Federation continues to encourage persons to be vaccinated and if they cannot be vaccinated for medical or religious reason(s), then they must submit to bi-weekly Covid-19 testing.

The Private Sector has been remitting all contributions to the Statutory Bodies within the country and therefore requests that Government provide COVID-19 testing at cost to reduce the expense to the Private Sector for approximately one (1) month.

Finally, we call for there to be continued consultation with the private sector, social partners, and the unions going forward on this and other issues that affect us as a nation.
