Veteran Caribbean broadcaster Julian Rogers has urged regional journalists to embrace artificial intelligence in news production.

He made the appeal on Thursday, while delivering the seventh lecture in The UWI, Cave Hill Campus’ 60th anniversary legacy lecture series, in association with the Nation Publishing Company Limited.

Speaking on the topic ‘From Rediffusion to AI: Caribbean Media’s History and Future Prospects’, Rogers also called for greater investment in the media.

“You have to look at the media as a key player in the development of these countries. And if there’s no platform for people to talk, to share, for the media to act as an educator, as an entertainer… we’re going to have problems,” he said.

  1. Julian just today they say ChatGPT just leaked a document which got the AI king deposed. You sure our small islands can manage!

  2. ÀI is a polarizing subject anywhere you go in the world right now. But AI is here to stay and it would be shortsighted to disregard the numerous ways it can be used to improve our daily lives. Right now it is fear of the unknown that is driving fright and doubts into the minds of not just journalists but people in general.

  3. @ I don’t know my name
Has it ever occurred to you that your moniker says a lot about you.
(AI) Artificial Intelligence has around for along time impacting humans in ways they don’t know or understand.
ChatGPT was released to the public a little over a year ago. Up until then the public could not get in a device uterlizing the benefits of AI
If you are on Facebook your feeds are generated by AI, no differently Tictok. These small islands would be less corrupt and more productive and well served to adopt the technology.
Rather than Gaston seeing a future for Antigua and Barbuda, glorifying more jobs watching dishes and making beds; how about coders building products supplanting those lost by the Ukraine war? Coders in India are already taking on many programming assignments to to carry out chores in hotels before ChatGPT was released. AI will be replacing those hotel jobs before they even arrived
Google Bard is no different, in fact the musical chairs with Sam Altman will benefit Google Bard as he joins Microsoft
Alexa and Siri are applications powered by artificial intelligence (AI)
Amazon been using AI to dominate e-commerce for 20 years
The question is: does Julian Rogers and UWI understands what AI is all about?
