J’ouvert hits the streets in Antigua and Barbuda, marking the beginning of carnival

1

Dominica’s bouyon band Tripple K and Asa Banton managed to pull some of the largest crowd of revelers.

People of all ages, from young children to mature adults, can be seen dressed up as blue or red devils, covered in colored paints, mud, or pitch oil as they dance through the streets.

J’ouvert is a celebration of ancestors who have passed on, and it is also a way to express liberation from the constraints of the past.

Many foreigners have come to the island, and people in neighboring areas where Caribbean people have immigrated also celebrate J’ouvert before the official start of Carnival Mas, where elaborate costumes are displayed and danced through the city streets.
