Jeffrey Daniel, convicted of murder, faces sentencing today for the killing of Emanuel ‘David’ Roberts.

The tragic incident occurred at Roberts’ Newfield home on May 21, 2021.

During the November 2023 trial, evidence revealed that Daniel, the ex-boyfriend of the deceased’s stepdaughter, had been warned not to return after a trespassing incident on May 16, 2021.

Despite the warning, Daniel reappeared a few days later, prompting a confrontation with Roberts, who used a cutlass. In the ensuing scuffle, Daniel gained the upper hand and inflicted a long, deep laceration, two broken ribs, leading to Roberts’ death from massive blood loss.

Daniel’s lawyers, Wendel Alexander and Wayne Marsh, argued self-defense and accident, but the judge, Tunde Bakre, ruled against these defenses. Despite the circumstantial nature of the prosecution’s case, Justice Bakre had no doubt that Daniel was responsible for the elderly man’s death. Daniel was convicted of murder in November 2023 and has been in prison awaiting sentencing.
