Twenty-three-year-old Javid Browne has to pay $700 compensation for punching another man in his mouth.
Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel-Edwards handed down the sentence after Browne pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding in the All Saints Magistrates Court this week.
The prosecution said 37-year-old Theon Goodwin was walking on a road in All Saints when Browne approached him from behind.
They said the defendant tried to engage Goodwin in conversation but the complainant showed no interest.
The complainant, who took the stand, said, “I asked him if he love man”.
It was following this exchange that the prosecution said Browne struck Goodwin in his mouth and ran.
Browne, who apologized for hitting the complainant, said he did so since Goodwin had threatened to harm him.
The complainant told the court he missed three days of work as a result of the injury he received.
Browne, a first time offender, was given 14 days to pay the compensation. In defaut, he will spend seven days in prison.
