A 39-year-old Jamaican man was sentenced to three years in prison for importing 18 pounds of drugs into the country in 2016.

Dwayne Omar Swaby was additionally fined $30,000 forthwith for the offence, when he appeared in the High Court today.

In default, he will serve one year in prison, which will run concurrent to the three-year sentence.

Swaby was caught at the airport as he attempted to enter the country with the drugs that were concealed in cheese and juice cans in his suitcase.

The defendant, who was on remand since the incident, pleaded guilty to possession and importation of a controlled drug last week.

He was reprimanded on the charge of possession.
