JAMAICA: Tsunami Waves Possible After Strong Earthquake

3

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management has advised that tsunami waves reaching 0.3-1 metre, or no more than three feet of water, are possible this afternoon.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook several Caribbean islands earlier today, and was felt in most of Jamaica.

The United States Geological Survey reports that the quake was 117km NW of Lucea.

  1. Dadli….it ain’t no fun? But, I have no idea, why, I am feeling a 9.5 coming your way! A 9.5 ain’t that far from a 7.7….

  2. Carful what u ask for…. Essentially, each successive magnitude is 33 times larger than the last. That means a magnitude-8.0 earthquake is 33 times stronger than a 7.0, and a magnitude-9.0 earthquake is 1,089 (33 x 33) times more powerful than a 7.0 — the energy ramps up fast.
