JAMAICA OBSERVER: The National Commercial Bank (NCB) has confirmed reports reaching OBSERVER ONLINE that an Automated Banking Machine (ABM) malfunctioned, spewing out cash in Santa Cruz on Tuesday night.

Sources told OBSERVER ONLINE that late Tuesday night when the ABM malfunctioned, people took advantage of the windfall by hurriedly grabbing cash that was coming from the machine.

NCB in a statement said the malfunction was due to a manual error and the machine was taken offline.

“There was an incident with one of our automated banking machines (ABMs) in Santa Cruz that night that incorrectly disbursed denominated notes to some customers due to a manual error. As soon as we became aware of the issue, we took immediate action to rectify the situation, and the machine was taken offline,” the statement read in part.

“We are still investigating the issue and reviewing our procedures to minimise the risk of a similar situation occurring again,” the statement added.

NCB did not state the amount of money that was incorrectly disbursed.

  1. Some persons must have thought that they were seeing an early Christmas windfall. It is not very often that customers are the beneficiary of free cash at ATM’S. Christmas in April for some. Don’t be surprise that the bank knows the customers who might have benefited from this and will ask them to repay the money or take it from their accounts.
