Inconsistent HIV/AIDS Reporting Raises Concerns at AIDS Secretariat

Private physicians’ inconsistent recording of HIV/AIDS figures has raised concerns at the AIDS Secretariat.

Deputy Programme Manager Oswald Hannays stressed the importance of accurate data from private practices while respecting confidentiality.

Hannays revealed that around 1,000 people live with HIV/AIDS in the country.

The first case in Antigua and Barbuda was in 1985, affecting 1,390 people by 2022, with 965 currently living with the virus, 65% accessing treatment, and over 400 deaths reported.

The Secretariat aims to increase public awareness and fulfill its mandate.
