IMF taps Jamaica finance minister for deputy role

(Reuters) – The International Monetary Fund on Monday named Jamaican Finance Minister Nigel Clarke to a top post at the agency, after the official spearheaded fiscal reforms in the Caribbean nation.

Clarke, nominated by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, is set to replace Antoinette Sayeh as one of the IMF’s three deputy managing directors at the end of October.

Clarke “is an exceptional public servant and policymaker,” Georgieva said in a statement, adding he had “stewarded his country’s economy to a stronger and more sustainable position.”

Clarke had been key in negotiating credit lines with the IMF, starting in 2016 as ambassador of economic affairs before being appointed finance minister two years later.

During his tenure, Jamaica’s central bank became an autonomous body and an independent fiscal commission was created. He also spearheaded policy coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing the nation’s economy to recover quickly.

Last year, Moody’s Ratings upgraded the government’s rating to B1 and changed its outlook to “positive.”

In June, the island was removed from the watchdog Financial Action Task Force’s so-called “gray list” of countries deemed to be doing too little to combat money laundering, one of Clarke’s signature achievements as minister.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said in a release that he had already drawn up a shortlist of potential successors to Clarke as both finance minister and parliamentarian.

  1. Congratulations to Dr. Clarke. Once again Jamaicans is demonstrating they world class intellects.
Just like Judge Tanya Chutkan in DC, Dr. Nigel Clark came out of upper middleclass families in Jamaica; did very well at Mona UWI; but went on to world class universities that gives the gravitas to function on the world stage.

We welcome Jamaicans who come with special and valuable talent to our shores to make a better life. Not those who corrupt our culture and disrupt our peaceful way of life.

  2. congratulations for what????? IMF messed up Jamaican bad bad, now he wants to go join the oppressors to oppress others???

  3. Truly a significant and historic achievement and milestone for Jamaica and the Caribbean A huge loss for Jamaica nonetheless. Dr Nigel Clarke was seen as a pillar and a corner stone for Jamaica’s successful and pivotal economic transformation and finance especially during the chaotic and turbulent Covid years. He is an enormous and reputable financial planner and his leadership and brilliance would be sadly missed not just in the Finance Ministry but throughout Jamaica as a whole. A really excellent pedigree he is and I know he will carry that excellence to the IMF as well.
He was also widely seen and regarded as the possible leader for the Jamaica Labour Party when current leader Andrew Holness leaves the scene. His tour of duty at the IMF would enhance his resume when he returns to Jamaica.

  4. Well! Well! This little racist family the Rothschild that financed world war or I should say tribal war 1&2 , it is because white people believe they are better than black people that they brand their fighting as world events and ours as domestic, this same Rothschild finance the German defectors against Hitler and finance a fairytale Israel from their colonial bible book, that you see killing the Palestinian today, but wait a minute, it’s been done before, that Palestine is really Africa and those Arabs killed the black inhabitants and took over the land. And now karma has it returning to them, this black man appointment in the IMF is nothing but helping the white world to maintain the neocolinial agenda and infantillised black nations, the white world has to continuously financed poverty on us with high interest rate that white people take command of our land resources, a black skin appointed is to break down the defense built up against this Rothschild family by black conscious movement across the world, didn’t the USA did it with Obama to infiltrate Africa and kill kadaffi the Lybian leader? This black appointment to the IMF will bring the black Caribbean economic might to it knees for slaughter, taking into consideration that Guyana dare to rise it’s head through oil resources, the Rothschild will make monies from everything since they are the financiers behind black rock bank and other white institution, the high sounding slogan IMF is just the velvet gloves they use to handle things upfront. If this Jamaican was as brilliant as we want to perceive he would have turn down that post, but after been educated in white institution, your brains is harvested to think white, none will reverse it to benifit their black people, they become a coconut brown outside and white inside, just say more moan for the Caribbean islands.
