The public school system in Antigua is facing the challenges of accommodating 600 new students from Barbuda and Dominica combined, following the passage of destructive hurricanes in those islands.
These figures from Director of Education Clare Browne who visited Cabinet on Tuesday to give an update on the state of education post hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Coincidentally, the additional students have joined at a time when five secondary schools had recently been expanded and a new school, Sir Novelle Richards Academy, was built. Because of this the Cabinet concluded that the additional students can be properly accommodated.
“The students from Barbuda have been integrated into several schools, but clustered in schools as close as possible to where they live. The same treatment has been extended to the youthful Dominicans,” notes from Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office Lionel “Max” Hurst read.
Meanwhile, the Director of Education reminded the Cabinet that the Dominican Republic has indicated its intention to build a new school on Barbuda.
Building plans for a school plant, somewhat similar to the Novelle Richards Academy, are to be submitted to the Dominican Republic.
“The new school costs EC$14 million to $15 million dollars, and would be a considerable gift from a sister-Caribbean country,” Hurst noted.
Cabinet accepted the recommendation of the Director to develop Climate Change and Global Warming as a curriculum subject to be taught to all students. A highly regarded educator has been identified to undertake this task and will be identified after the Ministry of Education has taken the necessary steps.

It’s good that the Dominican Republic has seen the need to help the people of Barbuda. I have worked in many Government schools and the Hispanic population was very high. This move of their Government is gratitude for what Antigua and Barbuda has done for their citizens.
