House Speaker Reveals Health Struggles

25

House Speaker Sir Gerald Watt, QC, issued an apology to the House for his late arrival, attributing it to health issues.

He revealed that he has been suffering from frozen shoulder in both arms, a condition that has severely impacted his daily life, making tasks like sleeping and dressing extremely challenging.

Watt expressed his regret for the inconvenience caused by his health condition and asked for understanding from the members of the House.

To manage his condition, Watt has had to adjust his daily routine, requiring more time to prepare for the day ahead.

He mentioned that he has consulted with the Attorney General to prioritize the most important matters for discussion, deviating from the usual agenda to accommodate his health needs.

Watt’s, 85, announcement highlights the personal challenges faced by public figures and the need for flexibility in managing parliamentary proceedings.

Members of the House expressed their support for Watt and assured him of their understanding during this difficult time.

  1. IT IS TIME FOR SIR GERALD WATT TO RETIRE…..Time to relax at home and tend to a garden or write memoir.

  2. Mr Watt, 85, it’s pass time to retire. I just don’t understand why you old guys don’t step aside to make room for new leaders. It’s ridiculous. You must have enough money by now to live out the rest of your life comfortable. Read a good book, play more golf. Sorry, can’t play if you have frozen shoulders. All the more reason to go home and rest. I tried to watch Parliament today but all the old MP’s on the ABLP were falling asleep which made me tired, I had to take a nap.

  3. I am understanding as well, but they should have some one under study the procedures required to run the parliament. Also at the age of 85 I would recommend that he be relieved of his duties asap so as not to have him harassing himself to get to parliament or any other place. With that said he needs to go relax. ITS THAT TIME. where he should be relaxing cocking his legs up and enjoy a glass or two of lemonade.

Life is a joy enjoy it.

  4. Sir, there’s a word called resignation where you stay at home and spend time with your friends and families. I venture to say you’re not in that job for the money, so don’t let the ALP hierarchy keep you in that job purely for being an antagonist to the Opposition. Do the right thing, and resign.

  5. I am sorry to hear of your health issues.I do not like your style. However, when it comes to illnesses.I have a certain level of empathy towards any individual.
Speaker Watt, your good health is wealth.Your health is telling you something, sending you a signal. It is time for you to resign in good faith from that position. You are at a blessed age of 85 years.Go out into the world and do enjoyed the fruits of your life.In my opinion, you do not need to be doing that work at this time.Go gently into that good night. You do not need any powers. You cannot take any of it with you.

  6. Wow wow wow Sir Gerald G Watt Sir Robin Sir Malwyn please don’t resign it’s better for all of you to Die in office

  7. Wait,
You’re having health issues including a frozen shoulder, and
Your still trying to come to work
    and perform your duties?
    And you’re 85?
    And still working?
    Really!!
You can’t make this stuff up??
    Why are you still working?
    Retire, Gerald, retire!
Be careful you don’t croak right on that chair mr.speaker..
    Geeez

  8. The egomaniac aging clown eventually made it to Parliament.

He needs to stop hiding the dementia and come clean.

    • Sir Gerald as youngster I had tremendous respect for you as a conscientious activist, lawyer, politician and a drum major for justice. However, as the years went by you took a right about turn and you are no longer the person I once knew. Now as a senior, I can empathise with you, but I strongly suggest that you listen to your body as it speaks to you telling you pelucidly to do the honourabe thing…….RESIGN!

  9. What a ting, dear Lord! Does he consider himself irreplaceable, or does he fear to be forgotten, though never to be forgiven? Stbbirn as a goat, Sir Gerald Watt; ah you dat, chuupsss

  10. This guy headed up an elitist cabal of yellow skins, driven by cowardly being ashamed of their African heritage.

Once he was no longer able to keep up the farce of being down with masses; he went to the place where his heart belonged by becoming ALBP-aligned and immediately became fixate their rhetoric.

Move on; before Asot strides out of his slumber

  11. No one can retire or resign from the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda. The Governor General cannot accept it so the Speaker will expire in his seat. Maybe that’s what he wants

    • If that is the case, he can just stay home in his bed and see what happens in parliament. What happens to the deputy speaker you say, well that is another one who should enjoy his bed rest. We should realize that when we get old, we should not be harassing our selfs. We will have done our time. Can’t Gaston find anyone else to appoint?

  12. A correction to those asking the Speaker of the house to resign. He cannot resign. He can retire and get all his benefits. With the complications he now have, he should retire and start to collect his gratuity and pension. Because he is a stalwart in the Labour party, all his funds are already packaged for him, not like others who have to wait for years. Retire, Sir, and enjoy what’s left. Go home and rest. Parliament cannot cut short the people’s business to accommodate you because you are sick. People might say Yearwood is the Deputy. He might not have frozen shoulders but he can’t remember where the parliament building is. Do the right thing go and check your health.

  13. Wishing the Hon Speaker of the House the best as he deals with his health challenges. This is indicative of what is happening worldwide. Elderly people do not know when to hang up their boots and call it quits. Like they are afraid of the younger generation and their capacity to lead. Look what is happening in the US. Two old men running to be President.
