The Antigua and Barbuda Lower House of Parliament has passed legislation enabling foreign police forces to operate within the nation during the T20 Cricket World Cup.

Attorney General Steadroy Cutie Benjamin, addressing the parliament, emphasized the importance of this legislation for the safe and orderly conduct of the event scheduled for June.

“This bill facilitates a crucial security collaboration by allowing police officers from the countries participating in the World Cup to have the same rights and powers as our local forces,” explained Benjamin.

“These measures are in the interest of maintaining the highest security standards for both the players and the thousands of expected international spectators.”

During his speech, Benjamin clarified that the visiting police forces would operate under the direct control and order of the Antiguan Commissioner of Police, ensuring that their actions remain strictly regulated.

“This is about propping up the safety and security of all visitors. The presence of international police forces will supplement our efforts in handling large crowds and potential security threats more effectively,” he stated.

The Attorney General reassured the parliament and the public that the implementation of this law is aligned with international security standards and similar arrangements made during previous international sporting events.

“We are not alone in this approach. This is a harmonized piece of legislation across the region where the cricket is taking place, ensuring a unified security protocol,” Benjamin added.

The passage of the bill was met with broad approval in the House, with members recognizing the need for enhanced security measures during such a significant international event.

The law is part of a broader regional effort to ensure that the Caribbean remains a safe and attractive destination for international sports and cultural events.

The AG did not give details as to where the foreign police officers will come from, however, it is expected that they may come from the Regional Security System and other friendly governments participating in the World Cup.

As Antigua and Barbuda prepares to host the ICC T20 World Cup, this new legislation marks a significant step towards ensuring that the event is not only successful but also secure.

  1. They would operate under a jokey Commissioner. Lord I hope they don’t start a coup and overthrow him.

  2. The visiting police officers should teach the local police the art of proper investigation 🔎, evidence gathering, freedom of speech, proper arrest procedures and TIMELY RESPONSE TO EMERGENCIES.

  3. What did we do for all the other cricket tournaments we have had here for decades? Or is this another segway for the Chinese?

      • Just remind them caused they are suffering from amnesia. Unfortunately, most of them are suffering from Liabetes with their usual political nonsense.

  4. Not against security, but you got to be kidding me? What has become to the Caribbean, and in particular Antigua, that we need police with big guns walking around for a cricket game?

We must be living in Baghdad to rarse. Is this really Antigua he’s talking about?

  5. I thought about this and I almost agreed until I reviewed my analysis on Antigua and Barbuda Police force and realize that it is not that they may not have enough police officers but that the officers are not being used in a strategic manner (even if they do not have proper policing knowledge).

With leadership that could use the force, police members, and military it has efficiently the kind of crimes happening could be drastically reduced and an event like the ICC would not need this legislation.

All that was necessary was that qualified security officers and retirees from the force offered the opportunity to be deputized as security and bodyguards for the appropriate people, for the event, leaving the main officers available to police the games and community.

This was the opportunity to utilize my recommendation I posted on here for years and months. Using qualified or usable retires (military, police, immigration, fire, other government workers who can be trusted) that can be trained to provide auxiliary policing and security services.

Many areas of this event simply requires people to secure areas, retired officers already with a fire-arm and license could actually and easily provide such assistance.

I think it is time people start to do like me, stop following and begin to lead with innovative, pragmatic and bold solutions.

Read all these lazy legislation is so upsetting to me.

I must inform you that intense port scrutiny of incoming shipment and arrival must be done. Events like these provide the best opportunity for illegal weapons and drugs that will have longterm consequences even when such action was made only by these actors for that moment.

I promise you this, coming from settled research and analysis, crime rate will substantially increase after the events. If the actions I am recommending aren’t put in place before and during the events. You will see longterm severe crime problems. It is best solved strategically, as detailed here and previously by me.

  6. No one should have to guess where these offices will be coming from. Bed spread cutie should have told the nation this while piloting the bill in parliament.
As usual with this regime, everything is always cloak and dagger.
