Hotel staff volunteers support youth during Child’s Month

Throughout the month of May, Child’s Month, team member volunteers at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, have kicked off a campaign to support and inspire young people throughout several institutions in Antigua & Barbuda.

Earlier in the month, the Sandals Foundation volunteer team, comprised of the hotel
employees, delivered hundreds of books and art & craft supplies to the National Public Library’s
Youth Service department.

Ecstatic children – a part of the reading club – and library staff happily received the books and
supplies; and in an effort to make the visit more meaningful, volunteers also spent an hour
reading to the children.

In receiving the items, Carolyn Spencer, Deputy Director of the National Public Library, expressed gratitude on behalf of her team.

“We want to thank Sandals for their continued support of the public library. These books and school supplies will help our youth services which include a reading and art club. We look forward to Sandals’ continued support in the future.”

Quite often, very generous guests vacationing at Sandals Grande Antigua bring with them
school supplies which are entrusted to Sandals for distribution to those with the greatest need.

A suggestion from a Sandals volunteer led to most of those school supplies being donated to
the Jennings Secondary School’s Care Committee which provides assistance to students from
low-income homes. Those students often cannot afford the tools necessary for their education
and that is where the Care Committee steps in.

“We appreciate the assistance to our students,” Jennings Principal Rosalind Beazer said. “We have found the greatest need to be exercise books, binder sheets, scientific calculators and geometry sets.”

In addition to the topping up the Care Committee’s bank of supplies, the volunteers organized a
mini-career fair giving the students demonstrations of their job functions and exposing them to
the varied career paths in the hospitality industry, from concierge to water sports.

The Sandals Foundation volunteers also made a donation of household and personal hygiene items to and planned a fun day for the Good Shepherd Home for Girls, with which the Sandals Grande Antigua resort has a long history of partnership.

For the balance of the month, they will also donate almost 100 packs of playdoh, crayons and other art supplies to the three public pre-schools through the Department of Early Childhood Development Unit.

In a true spirit of volunteerism, the team will also spend the afternoon reading with some of the students at the Simon Bolivar Pre-school.
