Staff at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre Resume Duties After Assurance of Back Pay by Friday

St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – 1 April 2025

General staff at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre briefly withheld their labour on Tuesday in protest over delayed back pay, but resumed duties after being assured the outstanding payments would be made by Friday.

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Public Service Association (ABPSA), Joan Peters, said hospital workers were frustrated after learning on Monday that their back pay—initially expected in December alongside other public servants—would now be disbursed in batches.

“The workers were not satisfied with that,” Peters said. “They decided to stand up because they want all of their colleagues to be paid in short order.”

According to Peters, the staff returned to work following assurances that the full amount owed would be settled by the end of the week.

The brief protest caused minimal disruption, and services at the medical facility have since returned to normal.
