Honoring the Late Asot Michael: Minister Fernandez Pays Tribute

1

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez has paid tribute to the late Asot Michael, describing him as a “colorful character” whose presence will be deeply missed in Parliament, his constituency, and among his close family and friends.

Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show, Fernandez reflected on Michael’s contributions to Antigua and Barbuda, highlighting his passionate debates and longstanding service as a Member of Parliament.

“Asot Michael was a unique personality who left an indelible mark on this country. His fiery debates in Parliament, his unwavering dedication to his constituents, and his contributions to national development will not be forgotten,” Fernandez remarked.

The minister acknowledged that while they had their differences, Michael’s legacy extends beyond politics, with his family, friends, and constituents mourning his loss.

“He will be missed, not only by his family but by all those who knew him, including his parliamentary colleagues,” Fernandez added.

The government has announced plans to honor Michael with a fitting farewell. A vigil will be held on Tuesday, December 17, followed by the funeral service. In recognition of his service to the nation, government offices are expected to close early on the day of the funeral to allow employees to pay their respects.

Fernandez expressed his personal condolences to Michael’s family, particularly his sisters, Theresa and Sah, and to the constituents who continuously supported him throughout his political career.

Michael, known for his charismatic and at times polarizing presence, represented the St. Peter constituency for many years. Fernandez noted that his contributions to the community and Parliament were significant, and his absence will be felt across Antigua and Barbuda.

“He had his share of fiery moments in Parliament, often butting heads with colleagues, but his passion for his work and his dedication to his constituents were undeniable,” Fernandez reflected.

“His family, friends, and constituents can take solace in the knowledge that he served his country with dedication,” Fernandez concluded.

  1. ONE THOUGHT OR TWO
“You will be remembered forever by the tracks you leave.”
A very interesting and revealing tribute to Asot (‘Ascot’ ) Michael by Lennox Weston (‘straight from the horses mouth’ ) was published in ANR, Nov.14, 2024.
Here are some important excerpts in the context of thoughts of our less national (village) development but more of the self- aggrandizing activities in our tribal-party game of politics.
“Asot was not a development-oriented person, he was a people person. Asot did not build structures, organizations, or develop tangible community projects, processes or infrastructure. Asot focused on assisting individuals directly and individually……..Asot had the personal financial resources to sustain this approach……”
“Asot came within six votes of pulling off a stunning electoral victory and making his beloved labour party pay the ultimate price of losing political power and seeing Asot ascend to the office of Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.”
Immediately, this comes to mind, William Shakespeare’s play – Macbeth – that explores the psychological and physical effects of political ambition that end in tragedy: “I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only/
Vaulting ambition, o’er leaps itself /And falls on th’ other…..(Act 1, Scene 7)

Then, (Lennox Weston)”In tribute to Asot Michael I would recommend that an Asot Michael Humanitarian Foundation be established, a public private financing partnership, managed by independent private management to continue the legacy of helping those in need for a variety of causes…….”
Now, for consideration of an Asot Michael Humanitarian Foundation, what if a DAF account (a donor-advised fund earmarked for charitable giving) is set up specifically to finance a STEM- based Asot Michael Learning Centre(STEM- the letters stand for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)?
The Learning Centre can offer classes and workshops in STEM-related fields including computer science, coding, robotics, video game design, film/ tv photography, cybersecurity, with an annual science camp.
Videos for Pre-K children can also be included.
We can forever remember this motto: “Knowledge is freedom (financial freedom, economic power)/Moulding young minds for the future” – Willikies Child Development Centre.

Condolences to Asot’s (‘Ascot’s ) family, friends, and the many people who benefited from his reliable giving.
I offer this Christian hymn: ‘Nearer my God to Thee/ Nearer to Thee! Even though it be a cross….’

Separately, this headline was in ANR, Nov.19,2024: MPs propose monument in honour of Sir Gerald Watt, KC.
Consider this: What if The Antigua and Barbuda Law Library, established by The Library Act of 1994, is renamed the Sir Gerald O.A.Watt and (the late attorney-at-law) John E. Fuller Law Library of Antigua and Barbuda?

    Respect.
