The Ministry of Sports has announced the abrupt postponement of the highly anticipated Semi-Finals and Finals of the Ministry of Sports Secondary School Football Competition 2023, originally slated for the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG).

The decision to reschedule comes as a response to the current deplorable conditions at the ARG, marred by uncleanliness and the presence of broken bottles on the playing field.

The safety and well-being of players, officials, and fans have been cited as the primary reasons behind the sudden deferment of the matches.

The Ministry acknowledges the inconvenience this postponement may cause and extends its apologies for any disruptions to plans.

The new dates for the Semi-Finals and Finals have been set as follows:

  • Semi-Finals: Wednesday, 31st January 2024
  • Finals: Friday, 2nd February 2024

Both events are still scheduled to be hosted at the ARG.

In a stern statement, the Ministry declared, “The decision to postpone these critical matches underscores the serious issues we are facing at the ARG.

Uncleanliness and the presence of hazardous materials on the field are not conducive to a safe and competitive sporting environment. We are fully committed to rectifying these concerns promptly.”

The Ministry assures the public that concerted efforts are being made to address the current challenges and to guarantee a secure and enjoyable experience for all participants and spectators.

The postponement raises questions about the adequacy of preparations and maintenance at the ARG, prompting scrutiny of the venue management practices.

The ARG, steeped in history and tradition, now finds itself under increased scrutiny, with concerns over its suitability for hosting major sporting events.

The Ministry of Sports emphasizes its dedication to resolving the issues and restoring the ARG to a standard that meets the expectations of athletes, officials, and the public alike.

  1. The Concert was held at ARG last week. Why the heck they did not jump on it and clean up the damn grounds.Knowing the games were going to be held there.

  2. Bottom line the event can’t be held because as a nation we are unsanitary and untidy. We go to an event and we throw things all over the place including waste from our bodies. So the place is so filthy that another event has to be postponed to clean the place. It is not only the administration’s responsibility. It is we the people’s responsibility. The last time I checked that meant all of us UPP and ALP and the Orange party. All of us have that responsibility. We live in this beautiful place.

    • It is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health; So are you suggesting that everyone should have gone to the ARG the day after the concert to clean it up?
Such utter rubbish. Where are the planners- it is the norm after an event to clean the compound.
Can you keep UPP out of your breath? Whenever something is bad you minions want to share blame with the UPP but when it comes to sharing the praise for good works it’s only ascribed to the ABLP

  3. A…ALL BEVERAGES should be sold in paper or biodegradable cups! No more cans or bottles should be given to the customer!

B…PORTABLE VIDEO/AUDIO recording devices work. Use these to IDENTIFY perpetrators, have them arrested and charged for VANDALISM & LITTERING. Their fines could vary from Community Services, as in cleaning their litter but other littered areas, as well AND fines, depending on the severity, of the offence(s).
