With Antigua set to host a few major yachting events and the threat of the coronavirus (COVID-19) looming, Health Minister Molwyn Joseph plans to instill formal processing of passengers on yachts.

“We want to have a more formal processing of people coming on yachts in particular. We are going to be looking at the different areas where they are being processed in the Jolly Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard areas,” said Joseph.

“Traditionally, we have a strong presence, but in the leisure craft area, it has not been so because the numbers are smaller than those coming off the cruise ships,” he added.

The health minister also revealed that there are plans to educate the public about the virus starting with the schools as well as a disinfection campaign that will also be implemented in schools.

“We believe that we have to take pre-emptive measures, rather than waiting for things to come on us. We are going into the schools and we are going to be disinfecting all our public schools. The Central Board of Health has assured us they have 16 trained people in this area, and we will be giving them more equipment and supplies so that we can routinely disinfect the schools,” said Joseph.

  1. Mr. Health Minister, the city of St. John’s need to be disinfect to it is very filthy. If or whenever the COVID-19 reaches our shores and meet face-to-face with the filth in St. John’s, COVID-20 will be formed.

    • Well the Nation’s rich? Rich? Rich?
Has to be, since, when the COVID-19, hit St. John’s, the sight of St. John’s alone will stop COVID-19, dead in its tracks!

St. John’s, what has become of your daughter by the name of Beauty, and your bestie Tranquility?

  2. If the health department has the spare capacity to deploy to monitoring the boats arriving, I’d suggest they’d be better employed educting the taxi drivers.

Current information says 30% of the people infected on that cruise ship in Japan showed no symptoms. Planes carry hundreds of people, cruise ship thousands, and they get into taxis. I’ve read that to get the virus, you need to pick it up on your hands or spend 10-15 minutes within 3-6 feet of an infected person. Sounds like a taxi driver is likely to be most at risk to me.

  3. They could start by putting soap to wash your hands in the bathrooms of the hospital! Basic needs!
