The government of Antigua and Barbuda says it is no longer prepared to waive the $10 fee that is attached to the importation of tires into the country.
Health Minister Molwyn Joseph spoke on the issue recently during a ceremony to commission a new shredder at the National Solid Waste Authority.
The machine will be used to shred around 3000 used tires daily as the government tries to control litter at the Cooks Sanitary Landfill and effectively reduce the mosquito population.
The revenue from the tire importation fee will be used to cover the cost of shredding.
“No more exemptions. All those ten dollars will be collected to pay for this service,” said Joseph.
