Health Centre Staff Goes On Strike

13

Employees of the Health Centre on All Saint’s Road in St John’s hosted a picket this morning against deplorable working conditions and back payments.

The workers have complained to the department’s management about issues such as rat infestation, the leaking roof, a waterlogged department yard for some time now, according to the disgruntled workers.

“As you can see the building. They promised to fix it some time ago, but up to now nothing has happened,” another worker added.

As part of the strike, workers will not work beyond noon on workdays until the issues are addressed.

  1. This continue run down of government buildings are not going to end until Public Work’s put a preventative measure system in place to help them maintain these buildings. The department have the staffs at Public Work’s already so the only problem I can see is the materials on hand to do the repair work, or incompetency…

    • Please, not the material issue, again as, the “excuse…”
A…the Nation has enough stone to do whatever is required for stone/masonry work.
B…the Nation have enough sand, just ask the Barbuda Council, or better yet, take as much as you need; you are the government cutting cost on materials.
C…speaking of materials, I am quite sure, that plumbing, electrical, hvac, gypsum board, and other supplies such as nails to paint can be sourced by Our Government, and brought in free of charge, for the Government.

This is about MAINTENANCE, not, again not thecfull scale and scope, of a new project.

      Maintenance as in…

      A…daily inspections
      B…daily reports
      C…daily work orders
Maintenance of government properties, should not feel like a root canal, at your dentist without anesthesia. The dentist’s rum and pliers are now, on proud display in their display cases.
The PPM – Piss Poor Management of government agencies and departments, must be a relic of Our past as well.

  2. The Prime Minister, the Hon. Gaston Browne should, must relieve MP Lenox Weston, of his duties, as the Minister of Government, responsible for the Public Works Department, along with publicly admonishing MP Molwyn Joseph, and the Permanent Secretaries in both Ministries which are responsible for this crisis….

PPM – Piss Poor Management, plain and simple.

  3. This is the problem that we always face in Antigua. There are no resources for maintenance or a schedule for that matter, and we only fix when things are utterly falling apart.

    • How can you say that there is no resources? Doesn’t the human resources included to? So then, why paying salary and wages to non-performance of maintaining government buildings? Can Public Work’s provides a daily report showing what maintenance work was carried out including repairs and preventative?

    • …here’s an “Issue,” that I have with your “dry joke,” I know that you’re not joking, however, as laughable as your comment is, I am scared to death laugh, since, it could be as contagious as an Antiguan drought, requiring me to drink lots of CORONA, with lime on hand, to ward off and mental VIRUS, associated with the incompetence, of several Government agencies, managed by the Wutan Clan recruits!

  4. So you telling me that even the Tesla have better storage and working condition than humans.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  5. I passed that building today and tried to figure out how could people even be opertating in there. I feel like these government officials feel as if the workers are animals and to make it worst I wouldnt even let my dog go there

  6. I wonder if this is a rented building. Politicians renting from cronies with no provision in the contract to repair and maintain. Then tax payers end up repairing a private property

  7. I was at the health center a few weeks ago and I was completely blown away as to the condition of the place! The yard… The building… Absolutely horrible!

Right off the bat, I knew that no government minister office is down there, and I’d be surprised if the PS office was there.

The only difference between what’s there today, and from what I recall from my childhood, is that they paved the yard, stop parking the garbage trucks there, and MANY YEARS AGO, slapped some new paint on the building and fence the property!

    We can do better!

  8. Some thing really needs to be done…..the government cannot continue to have so many public servants/departments working half days due to horrible working conditions, as that represents fifty percent productivity. Government MUST do better!

  9. It seems like private sector owners take better care of their buildings than government. I work in a new building and everyday the owner sends persons to fix the AC, roofs, and alot more why is it so hard for the government to do this?
