GUYANA-President David Granger returns home on Tuesday

President David Granger, who was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, returns to Guyana on Tuesday following his medical treatment in Cuba, according to an official statement issued here.

The Guyana Embassy in Cuba said that since his diagnosis, the President’s medical team here has “performed a number of medical interventions” and that Granger has received the first round of chemotherapy treatment and “has responded very well.

“With the President’s highly specialized medical care and treatment for nearly three weeks – and his positive response to the medical interventions and treatment – his medical tam of Cuban specialists has given approval for him to travel to Guyana,” the Embassy said in a statement.

It said that Granger will leave here on Tuesday arriving in Georgetown in the evening.

But it said that Granger “may be required to return to Havana in a time prescribed by his medical team in order to examine and evaluate the progress of his recovery – and to extend his schedule of treatment”

The statement said nonetheless that President Granger “continues his daily routine of work, treatment and rest under the supervision of his medical team” and that earlier this month he met with Cuba’s First Vice- President, Salvador Valdes Mesa and the Vice-Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), Ana Teresita Gonzalez Fraga, “to discuss a number of matters of mutual interest”

The statement said that President Granger, wishes to reiterate “publicly his deep appreciation” to the Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermuda, Army General Raul Castro Ruz as well as other senior Cuban government officials “for the excellent arrangements that were put in place for his arrival in Cuba and his subsequent extraordinary medical treatment”.

It said Granger also wanted to thank Guyanese nationals at home and abroad, as well as his Caribbean Community (CARICOM) colleagues and others who “sent their best wishes for his full and complete recovery – and his speedy return to Guyana to again serve the national interest.

“He is ever grateful for their prayers and support,” the statement noted.
