A 38-year-old man will return to court on June 25, charged with the murder of his wife, whose body was found in a shallow grave last week.

Ryan Sugrim appeared before Magistrate Zameena Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate Court, charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Zaila Sugrim, a mother of five.

Sugrim, who was buried two days ago, is reported to have gone to visit one of her sons when she disappeared.

The prosecution alleges that Sugrim killed her between May 11-14  this year and then set her body on fire. He buried her charred remains in a shallow grave.

Sugrim was not required to plead when he appeared in court on Monday, but his attorney, Sanjeev Datadin, told the court that pre-trial publicity could jeopardise a fair trial for his client.

Datadin urged the court to address the situation noting that some of the reports in the media may be false and could affect the case.

He also complained that his client was grilled by investigators in the absence of a lawyer and that he has since written to the Police Complaints Authority on the matter.

The magistrate after hearing the complaints adjourned the matter to June 25.
