Guyana: Fire destroys millions of dollars in goods in Georgetown

A fire has gutted a supermarket and warehouse in the Guyanese capital, Georgetown.

According to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), the blaze, which began early on Saturday morning, started in the warehouse that housed a large quantity of cloth and other combustible materials.

The blaze quickly spread to the Hong Wei Supermarket.

Firefighters rescued five Chinese nationals who were trapped in the building. Three of them were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, along with a firefighter.

The diligent work of firefighters over the weekend prevented the blaze from spreading to La Penitence market.

GFS investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
