The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard successfully rescued five individuals from the cargo vessel AMAYA on Thursday.

The vessel, carrying cement and stone, encountered distress when it began taking on water around 4 am, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Based on reports, the incident occurred after the vessel had been grounded on a sandbank around 10:30 pm the previous evening, awaiting high tide to depart.

Rough water conditions caused the vessel to start sinking, prompting the crew to seek assistance.

The Coast Guard responded, arriving to find the vessel sinking.

After a rescue operation at 6:30 am, all five crew members were safely extracted and taken to Headquarters Coast Guard.
