SOURCE: Newsroom Guyana- President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Friday announced that the Governments of Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) formed a new company that will introduce a passenger and cargo regional ferry system.

President Ali, while speaking at a contract signing event for the new US$35 million Mackenzie/ Wismar Bridge in Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice), said the company was formed on Thursday.

Through this company, the ferry system is expected to transport passengers and cargo among Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

“That will open up massive opportunities,” he said.

Subsequently, Dr. Ali told the News Room that the three governments are still discussing the venture.

“We have to get this going and then we have to work on expanding,” the Head of State said.

Solving intra-regional transportation woes has been a huge focus on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for years now. With the current revitalised focus on guaranteeing the region’s food security, solving this problem is also in focus.

Last year, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) announced it would finance the consultancy services for a study on the options available to establish a new shipping service across Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.

In October, when the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum was hosted in Guyana, President Ali said the African Export Import (Afrexim) Bank is keen on supporting a Caribbean private sector proposal for an intra-regional system that could allow the cheaper transportation of goods and people via the sea. As such, he encouraged regional private sector players to form a consortia and get the project going.

  1. What a Caribbean trilogy of great minds. These leaders are putting the region and their citizens first to help with the movement and travel for ɓusiness, commerce and general travel.

None of this go it alone (like our – out of touch Prime Minister) without proper consultation amongst your Caribbean colleagues to thrash things out, so that you can all reach a workable consensus.

WORKING IN ISOLATION ISN’T ALWAYS BEST OPTION MR BROWNE!

  2. How dare they could omit Antigua & Barbuda whose leader has the greatest visionary mind in the region? Curious George is just being sarcastic.🤣

  3. I COULD NOT AND CANNOT BELIEVED THAT GASTON BROWNE IS NOT INCLUDED.THE MAN WHO WAS GOING TO BORROW ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA OUT OF DEBT.NOW HE IS GOING TO TAXED THE PEOPLE TO DEATH.GASTON,PLEASE SEND ME THAT MATHEMATICAL FORMULA.GOOD LUCK TO THOSE THREE LEADERS.

  4. Now this is how great minds come together and work for the betterment of their people.

I’ve been to the Linden/Mackenzie/Wismar area, where most of the Boxite is manufactured in Guyana, and I can tell you that this bridge is a massive undertaking, and should bring huge investment opportunities to that.

I’m not a bias person, but I urge the guyanize population in Antigua to go back home and be a part of these great opportunities that have arise in your country, because I can tell you this, that the little turkey and ham that this Gatson Brownes administration gives out every election is all that he has for you..

I say this with all sincerity.

  5. I can tell you that most of the Guyanese in Antigua are black and the Indian Government is not willing to share the wealth of the country equitably with them. They are happy in Antigua away from the racism.

  6. Gaston is arrogant and doesn’t know how to work with people. He thinks he is the brightest bulb in the room. It appears that he is not liked by some of the Caribbean leaders.
In regards to liat, I heard him in a gandering in Guyana telling the President that he wants liat but is not prepared to pay for it. Don’t be surprised that that ferry sails to the northern Caribbean in the future.

  7. I am reading the comments and have to say that I got a good laugh. Why on earth would they include Antigua in this plan. We are far too north for it to be of benefit. With time and expansion then they would include the southern Caribbean and then work up.

I am amused also that we Caribbean folks are still so busy competing among outselves. Can’t we see that that is exactly what they want? Divide and conquer and we are so stupid to see. Real slavely mentality still embedded in use. Come on people…..cut the chains and bondage.

  8. Another example of Caribbean Governments throwing taxpayer money at a problem that doesn’t exist. Guess it’s how they continue to steel money and keep us poor. Love to see West Indians on a ferry for two days to Guyana and a day plus to Barbados when 30 minute flights exist. The ferry from Trinidad to Tobago is barely used. Would the politicians use it? Ventures like this belong in the private sectors hands. Not the governments that can barely pay their bills.
