Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration E.P Chet Greene, said regional cooperation on foreign policy is needed more than ever in this the era of COVID-19.
Minister Greene made the point at the Twenty-Third Meeting of the Council for Foreign and
Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) which was held
virtually on the 7-8 May 2020.
He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a debilitating effect on regional societies and economies.
He expressed the view that as a group, CARICOM should speak with one voice particularly as it relates to the international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In addition, he wants the region to approach these institutions to lobby for more resources to be made available to countries in the area.
The foreign minister also expressed the region’s gratitude for the work done by regional
institutions such as the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA0 the Pan American Health
Organisation (PAHO) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
He credited these organisations for ensuring that the necessary public health guidelines and emergency systems were put in place to safeguard the health and wellbeing of Caribbean people.
Greene also expressed both Antigua and Barbuda’s and the region’s ‘deep appreciation’ to the governments of both Cuba and Venezuela for their ‘timely support’ in providing human and other resources to help the region fight the disease.
