Gov’t sets new timeline for completion of 500 homes

The government says it wants to complete all 500 homes under its flagship housing project “within the next 12 months.”

The ABLP administration started off by wanting to build 500 homes in 500 days but have said reallocation of resources meant that only 48 could be completed more than 1000 days later.

The three managers of the National Housing Development and Urban Renewal Company shared the new timetable for the completion of the new homes with the Cabinet yesterday.

“The expectation is that 356 homes will be complete by the end of 2017 and 142 new homes before mid-year 2018,” said Lionel Hurst, Government’s Chief of Staff.

The plan involves immediate access to $30 million dollars according to him.

“Two banks have already pledged to provide this amount, and the sale of housing stock, both complete and under construction, will yield an equal amount. If all goes as projected, additional houses will continue to be constructed,” Hurst reported in a post-cabinet summary.

The government has been strongly criticized for not meeting the 500 houses target yet.

Keys were handed over to 17 homeowners on June 12. There are about three major sites where housing construction is underway.
