Gov’t revved up about power boat racing event

The government of Antigua & Barbuda has given “tentative” approval for a powerboat racing company to host an international event here next year.

But first, it’s “awaiting further investigations and reports from the ICONIC racing company.”

Officials from ICONIC asked the Cabinet to include this particular sport on the annual roster of events “that bring large numbers of tourists and participants to Antigua.”

“The first would take place in March 2018 if all the agreements can be worked out,” notes produced by government’s Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst indicated.

“About 150 craft would participate and hundreds of participants, their fans, and others with interest in the sport will also descend upon Antigua, much like Sailing Week,” the notes said.

The races would be conducted at Jolly Beach and English Harbour and around the island; “they would be very near to shore to allow spectators to witness the events from land.”

Hurst thinks Antigua’s waters are ideal since there are conditions around March each year conducive to safety, speed, and excitement.
