Governor General Pays Tribute to Dame Edris Bird

Dame Edris Mercier Bird was a product of the liberal arts tradition from England’s colonial- education system. She excelled as a student, teacher and administrator of the arts. However, it is noteworthy that she willingly and enthusiastically embraced change at the UWI extra mural department and offered courses in the social sciences in the Principles of Economics, supported by the late Rupert “Rugby” Lake, gov’t economist and executive sports enthusiast. At that time, she also offered a course in Business Accounting. It was a fundamental change in the direction of student studies that is carried on today in A&B. Contextually, her life’s work must be analysed and celebrated.
Expressions and feelings of condolence go out to her family and friends on behalf of past students, colleagues and associates worldwide. Let Eternity be her judgement!
