Press Release
Today, Sunday February 4, 2018, as we celebrate World Cancer Day under the theme, ‘Uniting the World’s Population in the Fight Against Cancer’, Lady Williams joins me in encouraging all residents of Antigua and Barbuda to pause for a moment to not only consider the impact of cancer on our society, but to also make a commitment to increase their awareness of the disease while simultaneously taking steps for its prevention.
Cancer has impacted most, if not all families across the globe in one way or other. Antigua and Barbuda is no exception and presents with troubling data that our cancer rate in some categories is higher than that of the region.
Men, in particular, are suffering greatly from prostate cancer and women from breast cancer. We must all work together to stop this trend, through the use of preventative methodologies to include improved exercise and diet systems, early detection and proper treatment protocols. Persons with family histories of cancer are also encouraged to be particularly vigilant and take the necessary steps to break the trend or to address it at an
early stage.
Lady Williams and I commend the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, particularly the Ministry of Health, health care workers, the non-profit organizations and many individuals who are working hard to fight this disease.
The emotional support provided to cancer patients and survivors and their families by a number of non-profit organizations cannot be overlooked. This in combination with medical treatment has helped many patients to survive the difficult period in their lives. We commend you all.
We encourage all residents of Antigua and Barbuda to pay special attention to your health, not only on World Cancer Day but each and every day of the year. Let us each champion the cause
of good health for all.
