Government to Provide Direct Funding to Eliminate Dilapidated Homes, PM Says

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his administration plans to provide direct financial support to citizens to repair or rebuild their homes, as part of a new push to eliminate substandard housing across the country.

Browne said the initiative will allow individuals to access funding directly, marking a shift in how housing assistance is delivered.

“We’ll be introducing a new programme… in which our government will be providing funding directly to individuals to help them to repair or rebuild their homes,” he said.

The programme is aimed at addressing what he described as “pockets of poverty” and the continued presence of dilapidated housing in several communities.

“We are very concerned about the pockets of poverty within the country… and we’re trying to literally rid the country of all dilapidated homes,” Browne said.

He identified areas such as Point, Villa, Fort Road, Grace Farm, Otters and Green Bay among communities expected to benefit from the initiative.

The Prime Minister said the programme will complement existing housing efforts, which have focused largely on new construction and subsidized homes, by expanding support to those who already own property but lack the resources to upgrade it.

He framed the policy as part of a broader effort to improve living standards and reduce inequality, alongside investments in education, healthcare and housing.

“At the end of the day, it’s about improving the living standards of the people,” Browne said.

The proposed initiative comes as housing conditions and cost of living remain key issues ahead of the general election, with the government outlining a range of programmes aimed at expanding access to adequate housing.

  1. And there you have it my fellow critical thinking Antiguans. Gaston Browne has announced his 100th General Election promises.

Hand on heart, did anyone have any idea that Gaston Browne was going to go way way beyond what he promised Antiguans at the last GE.

Is this some sort undertakings record?

  2. This is a PM with the people in mind, not leaving anyone out.

Blessings to you PM Browne and team members. We continue to pray for continued wisdom and revelation so we the people can live better lives.

I pray sincerely though for salvation of the lost souls out there, may you be delivered from the mouth of the lion.

    Blessings

  3. So Gaston, while you are it..can you also promise to provide us with free electricity and water? and wbat about a new car for every family that does not have one? The fact is your promises have gone beyond desperation…and are now pathetic..and totally ridiculous..you think Antiguans are stupid?

  5. @Where the money go come from? Do you know why you are not receiving any water? Also, if is one set a workers money always on time is government. Do you work for the government? Cause if you do, you woulda done get pay since last week.

  6. Reading through the comments, I actually find PM Gaston Browne very charming, and I trust he will follow on his words; I simply know he’s becoming better.

‘“We’ll be introducing a new programme… in which our government will be providing funding directly to individuals to help them to repair or rebuild their homes,” he said.’

    That’s strong leadership!

  7. And PM while you at it, can you also promise to give former LIAT employees their 100% severance even paid in a 5 year period. That will help some of us with our mortgages, bills, etc. We were not only denied full severance, but vacation pay, back pay, our pension fund with clico. We are still out in the cold.

  8. Some areas in the Gray’s Farm & Green Bay areas need to be evacuated…. The area is overpopulated and the houses are too closely congested. It is a safe haven for criminals & fires

  9. There are many CHARLATANS all over the world, but they all have to come to Antigua to meet the greatest CHARLATAN of this generation. I do not know whether to admire you or to loath you. That’s why I’m not voting for you because I can’t make up my mind. YOU ARE JUST TOO MUCH
