Government To Build Home For Battered Women

3

(Exert From Cabinet Notes)

The Cabinet agreed to build a safe-house for battered women who may need to be removed from a household where violence is visited upon them.

The safe-house will be large enough to accommodate four to eight women and their children, in four bedrooms with separate bathrooms and even separate kitchen facilities. It is anticipated that stays in that safe-house would be for short periods and not become an alternative living place.

The exact placement of the structure, the cost of its construction and other details are to be worked-out with Public Works and the Ministry of Lands; appeals will be made to the U.N. Trust Fund and U.N. Women for assistance.

Girls who run away from home and fear returning for good reason may also be housed temporarily in such a space.  The Ministry of Social Transformation has made an appeal for this necessary and secure home. Churches in Antigua whose principals have agreed to play important roles in preserving the social fabric, will be called upon to provide leadership.

  1. Is the govt considering the battered men…..? Some men are violated from their spouses etc, in their own homes. Yet the law gives them a restraining order to stay a certain distance from their homes……
