The Government of Antigua & Barbuda has expressed its thanks to all the private citizens and businesses that have made contributions towards meeting the mounting challenges, especially of personal protective equipment (PPEs).
The contributions came at an ideal time especially as the government is not anticipating any significant external assistance since many of the developed countries are facing their own crisis from the COVID-19 pandemic, and are focused upon their own citizens’ needs.
The most recent benefactor, Mr. Calvin Ayre, contributed more than $4,000,000 dollars’ worth of goods.
Another benefactor has contributed the use of a private aircraft to fly supplies to Antigua; another emptied several containers with PPEs worth hundreds of thousands of dollars; a third gave accumulated and stored supplies of PPEs.
One supermarket gave an entire container of foods to be delivered to charity; and one church contributed US$10,000 cash to help to meet the mounting needs of the indigent.
The Government of India also contributed $1 million, deposited with the UNDP for programming; and, $150,000 to enable the purchase of PPEs.
Meanwhile, according to chief of staff Lionel Hurst, the World Bank and the IMF have not yet responded in a concrete way, though approaches have been made to these Bretton Woods institutions.
Hurst added that borrowing will become the means by which the Government will be able to meet expenses such as salaries, wages and emoluments; however, there is also a limit to borrowing given the need of the Treasury to meet a multiplicity of expenses, now and after the crisis has passed.

who are all these benefits going to cause i dont see no one coming around in my community knocking on doors and helping out the needy.
The question is…. How much did you gave?
I assume that many of those persons who have whole heartedly made such a tangible donation, have perhaps made the first two verses of the national anthem their mantra i.e
Fair Antigua & Barbuda
We thy sons and daughters stand,
Strong and firm in peace or danger
To safe guard our native land.
We commit ourselves to building
A true nation brave and free.
Ever striving ever seeking
Dwell in love and unity.
Big up to these guys and as to us who cannot make such a tangible contribution we can still play our part to defend this nation against this invisible enemy by complying to the Covid -19 protocols which has been asked of us from the authorities…. let’s not forget the great presidential speech, “it is not what our country can do for us but what we can do for our country”
