Government Set to Introduce New Tax on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

2

The government is set to introduce a new tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) to combat health concerns associated with excessive sugar consumption.

After over a year since the initial proposal, the tax aims to discourage the importation and consumption of high-sugar drinks.

Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst emphasizes the goal of encouraging parents to opt for healthier beverage choices for their children, highlighting the alarming sugar content in sodas and sweetened drinks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) endorses SSB taxation as an effective means of preventing diseases, with over 85 countries implementing similar taxes.

Research links sugary drink consumption to dental issues, diabetes, obesity, stroke, and cancer.

  1. Why oh why are we copying the UK on sugar tax?

Is this another ABLP tax grab by stealth?

On the whole, we are a fitter and healthier nation with a lifestyle that highlights that Antigua has the highest rate of CENTENARIANS than any other countries. Fact!

Another excuse for this nasty, wilful and vindictive ABLP government to tax the high heaven out of autochthonous and hardworking Antiguans.

    MY GOODNESS …

  2. This is an obvious tax grab. Taxing is not going to reverse obesity, any fool can figure that out.
