Government Says No Evictions During COVID-19 Crisis

19

Landlords have been told that the should not evict their tenants during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“No evictions are to take place during the Covid-19 crisis,’ the government said following it’s Cabinet meeting yesterday.

The Cabinet stated however, that tenants who accumulate  rental payments must be paid to Landlords in the future.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne estimates that 20 thousand people are out of the job in Antigua as many businesses have closed as a result of COVID-19.

The Consumers Affairs Division says consumers should get rent moratorium in writing.

  1. Please give the details of this statement. I find the statement to be unfair to Landlords, when not even partial payment is reccomended. Can we all now go to the supermarket and leave with groceries without paying?
The government should waive property taxes before making this statement.

    • I wholeheartedly agree with Ernest George. If landlords can’t evict tenants and must give a moratorium, then government cannot expect landlords to pay property taxes. Landlords should, just like tenants, receive a moratorium.

      • Also, why aren’t ministers opting for a reduction in their salaries to show solidarity for those 20 thousand out of work because of THEIR lockdown policies? Mind you, I’m not saying that the policies are wrong, but they have put people at a financial disadvantage, while ministers collect full wages. That’s not right!

    • Sound so irrational rn.. most ppl live from paycheck2paycheck, in the event of losing their job the lil funds they got should go to food and necessities. Quit acting like it’s regular day days outhere. You will be be compensated once the country is back to normal.

  2. That is the problem with these politicians who wants to look good but not actually doing good.

Landlord must not evict and I can understand the call for some humanity but it has to be between tenant and the landlord.
Government has no Business in that.

Then if so put something on the table (because so far I ain’t hear anything much to ease the squeeze) so landlord can work with.

Some Landlord have to pay bill and eat too

    • The government is right stop live like dog an cat ,you na see people a dead ….like you will take the house an land with you when you dead at lease the government are trying them best to help people, what are the landlord are doing running an stressing Tennant for rent ,they have children to feed ..no 1 don’t know how long this virus will go too so yah all show try live with love an pray to the jesus christ so we can get a treatment for this virus,….stop live like dog an Cat an have some understanding! !

  3. The Cabinet does not have the power to dictate that there are to be no evictions during the virus outbreak. Leases are private contracts governed by the relevant land laws. Cabinet cannot simply decide that the land laws concerning breach of lease contracts do not apply. Nonsense! If they do not want the laws to apply, then go to Parliament and change them. That is the only lawful way they can affect leases of land. Otherwise, it is only wishful thinking by Cabinet. Not enforceable.

  4. Also, why aren’t ministers opting for a reduction in their salaries to show solidarity for those 20 thousand out of work because of THEIR lockdown policies? Mind you, I’m not saying that the policies are wrong, but they have put people at a financial disadvantage, while ministers collect full wages. That’s not right!

  5. Didnt hear nobody making noise when the arrangement for banks to relax payments but loud now that likkle understanding go all around…its not like landlords aint gonna get they money just bill it n sort as arrears at a later time…yes landlords have things to do….eveyone does n everyone has to stop because their is no source of income, where the people suppose to get it from?…everybody feeling the squeeze and all that is asked is to have understanding at patience at this time… Where is humanity now?…it’s sad to see the value of money over humanity…

    • That is people for you. They were all screaming lockdown now we in lockdown them want the freedom. U just cant please them.

  6. The government is right much respect to the P.M ,him have a good heart. Much love an respect.

  7. Some landlord are so dumb, if you put out someone out of your house, lets think about it they will get another 1 ,but let think about it your house will end up left empty for months, so it best someone have money for you than you left with a empty house when the island open back yah can do the putting out is yur choice, i look at the news an seeing people die everyday so ,where are your heart at in this life our the life to come ? ? we all gonna die some day its all vanity ,God will bless you twice as much ,just be understandable! !!!!!!

  8. I will say this. Everyone needs to take a loss, just like a lot of employees are taking a loss. So i propose landlords taking a 25% cut on rent for 3 months. Failure to pay they evict.

  9. The statement by the Cabinet that Landlords should not evict tenants for non-payment of rent has no legal validity. I do understand the Cabinet’s position that given the crisis and tenants will be out of work, that Landlords should be more understanding and considerate of the tenants’ situation. However, the Cabinet needs to equally understand that not all Landlords are wealthy. Some of them depend on the rent to live and pay mortgages etc, therefore the bold statement by the Cabinet cannot be right. What the Cabinet should perhaps say is that Landlords who are in a position to forego rent for a few months during the crisis should perhaps do so. However, for the Cabinet to make it sound as if they are directing Landlords to forego rent in the crisis until things get better is clearly wrong. I guess Cabinet is making a request of Landlords but the headline of the article makes it sound like a directive. As I said Cabinet has no such power to direct, so I hope their humble plea was indeed a request.

  10. Good morning Cecedeloca

Please check with your bank and let them give you the details on the moratorium. I checked. You still have to pay the bank interest on the outstanding balance. So you would end up paying more over the lifetime of your loan. The interest alone is almost equal to your installments during the early years of your loan. What would make more sense, is loan freeze for a few months. No interest. No fees.

    Best regards

  11. Antigua rental prices have been to hi for a long time !!! Prices are for persons who earn hi income only . Gas and internet should be lower but the facts are most people are and are living beyond their means here in Antigua . Can understand maybe April pay what they can but believe March rent can be paid up . Any excuse not to paid people will take advantage of it what about car payments ?

  12. You cannot tell me not to evict for non payments of rent.Is Gaston foregoing rents on his properties. All of those tenants in his buildings should not pay their rents.Let us see what would happen then.Give the people a stimulus at this time to help them.By the way.Is there a conflict of interests in his rental matter. He is the Prime Minister and Landlord to the Government. What happens if his Administration refused to pay himself rent.Would his name sake,Gaston A.Browne go after his Administration for rents.LOL
