The government is considering a transition from the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) to a National Health Insurance system as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare financing and address rising medical costs.
During the post-cabinet media briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst indicated that the proposed shift would provide a more comprehensive approach to funding medical treatment and hospital infrastructure.
“The idea is to move beyond the Medical Benefits Scheme and establish a system that ensures long-term financial sustainability for healthcare services,” Hurst said.
The MBS, established in 1978, has played a key role in funding medical care in Antigua and Barbuda.
However, officials believe a broader National Health Insurance system would allow for improved healthcare access and better financial planning for medical expenses.
The proposal is expected to be developed in consultation with key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the public.
While no official timeline has been set for implementation, discussions are expected to continue in the coming months.
Government officials have assured that any transition will prioritize affordability and accessibility, ensuring that citizens continue to receive necessary medical care without undue financial burden.

The shift needs to be focused on proper public heath initiatives to prevent disease. Most of the health issues in Antigua are a result of lifestyle choices linked to poverty and lack of education on healthy habits. We really need to be more proactive. Antigua is so small and it relatively easy to do things right if we have the will to do so. We have all these beautiful community clinics that are understaffed and underutilized. If we promote a shift to a healthier population, we wont need to worry about high costs of medications to keep people alive. The government is focusing on the wrong things, the wealth of the country lies in its people, there is where the investments should be. All this high sugar, high sodium refined food is killing us and this needs to be addressed at the root.
