The government of Antigua and Barbuda is moving to strengthen its litter enforcement efforts, with plans to deploy more litter wardens and explore the use of CCTV cameras to monitor illegal dumping.
Speaking at the Post-Cabinet Press Briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst acknowledged that while litter wardens are already in place, their effectiveness has been questioned.
“At present, we have about half a dozen wardens, but the Minister has indicated that they may not have the vigor required to properly patrol and enforce the laws,” he said.
Authorities see an expanded warden program as key to keeping the country clean, particularly given the importance of tourism to the local economy. “
A clean Antigua and Barbuda is necessary if we are to attract repeat visitors, and maintaining a pristine environment benefits both residents and tourists,” Hurst added.
To strengthen enforcement, officials are also considering CCTV cameras in high-dumping areas to provide 24-hour surveillance. “It would be a combination of both [wardens and cameras].
The cameras would provide evidence, while wardens would be responsible for issuing tickets and taking enforcement action,” Hurst explained.
The government has not disclosed a timeline for the expansion but maintains that tackling illegal dumping and littering is a priority.
Officials are urging the public to take personal responsibility for waste disposal, warning that increased surveillance could lead to fines and penalties for offenders.

Seems like elections are around the corner. Whenever this government makes such outlandish promises you know they are trying to get the vote of the populace. The governmet cannot put cctv on the streets of St Johns. They cannot install cctv at the lone hospital. They cannot install cctv at government complex. Yet they are promising cctv in the wilderness to catch litter bugs. Thieves have stolen batteries off the solar lights on the main roads. Governmrt can’t afford cctv to police and protect them. And then they believe they are speaking to laboRATs alone. Those promises can catch only ALP supporters. When will Antiguans learn????
Expanding the litter warden program is a step in the right direction, but will there be enough funding to sustain it?
This could make a real difference in cleanliness, but will there be enough penalties for violators?
will it cover all areas, including rural and remote spots?
It’s about time! Now I hope the CCTV system is reliable and covers key areas.
will there be proper training for the new wardens?
